The Midd-standard Wireless Network

A third wireless network access method has been created on campus which promotes better connectivity to Middlebury resources.

This wireless network is named Midd-standard. Currently many users access our wireless network by turning-on their laptop and automatically connecting to midd_unplugged. Although this is an easy connection to make, for many this particular wireless access point is becoming saturated with connections and performance is degrading. There is no security on midd_unplugged; using it puts your data at risk.

Connecting to Midd-standard will improve your networking performance, provide added security and help us reduce the loads on midd_unplugged so that our guests will continue to have a viable Internet connection when visiting.

Please contact the Helpdesk at x2200 for the key to connect to Midd-standard. Use the Wireless Network Connection Status dialog box on your laptop to select Midd-standard.

NOTE: if you are already on midd_secure we recommend you stay with this access. Your Middlebury sign-in credentials will be the key for access and will not change. Midd-standard's key may change from time to time requiring you to re-authenticate to the network.


The midd_secure Wireless Network

BIG NOTE: Midd_secure is fast -- we've reserved a lot of bandwidth for it!

Configure your Windows XP Computer for midd_secure

To configure your Windows XP computer to access the midd_secure network, follow the instructions below.

  1. Double-click the Wireless Network Connection icon on the System tray (it looks like a computer with 3 curved lines on the right side). The Wireless Network Connection Status dialog box opens.

  2. Click Properties button.PNG. The Wireless Network Connection Properties dialog box opens.
  3. Click the Wireless Networks tab.
  4. Select midd_secure (Automatic) and then click Properties button.PNG. The midd_secure Properties dialog box opens.
    • If midd_secure (Automatic) is not listed, do the following:
    1. Click Add button.PNG. The Wireless network properties dialog box opens.
    2. In the Network name (SSID) field type midd_secure and proceed to the next step.
  5. Verify the settings below.
    • Network Authentication should be set to Open.
    • Data encryption should be set to WEP.
    • The key is provided for me automatically should be checked.
  6. Click the Authentication tab.
  7. Verify the following settings:
    • Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network should be checked.
    • EAP type should be Protected EAP (PEAP).
    • Authenticate as computer when computer information is available should be unchecked.
  8. Click Properties button.PNG. The Protected EAP Properties dialog box opens.
    • Click to uncheck Validate server certificate.
    • From the Select Authentication Method drop-down list, select Secured Password (EAP-MSCHAP v2).
  9. Click Configure button.PNG. The EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties dialog box opens.
  10. Click to uncheck the Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any) checkbox. **Leaving this checked for college-owned computers bound to the domain may be advisable - steps 12 and 13 will not apply if this is checked and you are logged into the system with a network account.
  11. Click OK xp button.PNG on all the dialog boxes to close them.
  12. After closing all dialog boxes, a Wireless Network Connection balloon pops up from the System tray. Click on it.
  13. The Enter Credentials dialog box opens.
    1. In the User name field, type your username.
    2. In the Password field, type your password.
    3. Click OK xp button.PNG.

You can now connect to midd_secure and have access to all of Middlebury’s internal resources from behind the firewall.


Configure your Windows Vista and Windows 7 Computer for midd_secure

To configure your Windows Vista or Windows 7 computer to access the midd_secure network, follow the instructions below.

  1. Click the Wireless Network Connection icon (it looks like a computer with three curved lines on the right side)on the Taskbar.The Wireless Network Connection Status dialog box opens.
  2. Click Connect to a network. The Connect to a Network dialog box opens.
  3. Click Set up a connection or network.
  4. In the Choose a connection option scrolling list select Manually connect to a wireless network and then click Next button.PNG.
  5. Make these changes to the Enter information for the wireless network you want to add pane.
    1. In the Network name field type midd_secure.
    2. In the Security type drop-down list selectWPA2-Enterprise.
      • The Encryption type drop-down list changes to AES. Please select TKIP.
      • The Start this connection automatically checkbox becomes checked.
    3. Next button.PNG.
  6. Click Change connection settings. The midd_secure Wireless Network properties dialog box opens.
  7. Click the Security tab.
  8. For Windows 7 only (for Windows Vista, skip to step 10): Click Advanced settings.
  9. Under the 802.1X settings, make sure the check box "Specify authentication mode" is checked. In the drop down area, select user authentication, not computer or user authentication. Click ok and you will return to the Security tab in Step 7.
  10. Verify that the Choose a network authentication method is set to Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP) and then click Settings. The Protected EAP Properties dialog box opens.
  11. On the Protected EAP Properties dialog box, do the following:
    1. Uncheck the Validate server certificate checkbox.
    2. Verify that the Select Authentication Method drop-down list is set to Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2).
    3. Click Configure button.PNG. The EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties dialog box opens.
  12. On the EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties dialog box do the following:
    1. Uncheck Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any).
    2. Click OK xp button.PNG.
  13. On the Protected EAP Properties dialog box, click OK xp button.PNG.
  14. On the midd_secure Wireless Network properties dialog box, click OK xp button.PNG.
  15. Wait for the Additional information required to connect to midd_secure taskbar popup to appear and then click it. The Enter Credentials dialog box opens.

  16. Vista: In the Enter Credential dialog box, do the following:
    1. In the User name field type your username.
    2. In the Password field type your password.
    3. In the Logon domain field type MIDD.
    4. Click OK xp button.PNG.
  17. Windows 7: In the Enter Credential dialog box, do the following:
    1. In the User name field type your MIDD\username.
    2. In the Password field type your password.
    3. Click OK xp button.PNG.

You are now connected to midd_secure and have access to all of Middlebury College’s network resources from behind the firewall.

Configure your Mac OS X Tiger Computer for midd_secure

Midd_secure is Middlebury’s secure wireless network. The traffic on this network is encrypted, providing increased security to those who use it. Note that this network is (usually) only available to faculty, staff and students. For example, guests and alumni do not have access to midd_secure and must use the wireless network midd_unplugged.

Most of the time, to use midd_secure, all you need to do is the following.

  1. Click on the AirPort icon (Airport icon.PNG) on the right end of the menu bar at the top of your screen.
  2. Select midd_secure from the list.
  3. Enter your username and password and click Mac ok button.PNG.

However, if the above procedure does not work for you, try the steps below.

  1. Click on the AirPort icon (Airport icon.PNG) on the right end of the menu bar at the top of your screen and select Open Internet Connect. The Internet Connect dialog box opens.
  2. Click 8021x icon.PNG.If you cannot see this icon, from the File menu select New 802.1X Connection.
  3. From the Configuration drop-down list select Edit Configurations.
  4. If midd_secure is listed in the Configuration list, delete it using the instructions a-b below. If midd_secure is not listed, go to the next step.
    1. In the Configuration list select midd_secure.
    2. Click Remove (a minus sign) to delete.
  5. Click Add (a plus sign) to add a new configuration.
    1. In the Description field type midd_secure.
    2. From the Network Port drop-down list select AirPort.
    3. In the User Name field enter your Middlebury College username.
    4. Leave the Password field blank as any subsequent password change would render this configuration unusable.
    5. In the Wireless Network field type midd_secure.
    6. In the Authentication field select PEAP (PEAP should be the only option that has a checkmark).
    7. Click Mac ok button.PNG.
  6. Close theInternet Connect dialog box.
  7. To connect to midd_secure click the AirPort icon (Airport icon.PNG) on the right end of the menu bar at the top of your screen and select midd_secure. You will be prompted to enter your username and password.


Configure your Mac OS X Leopard and Snowleopard Computer for midd_secure

Midd_secure is Middlebury’s secure wireless network. The traffic on this network is encrypted, providing increased security to those who use it. Note that this network is (usually) only available to faculty, staff and students. For example, guests and alumni do not have access to midd_secure and must use the wireless network midd_unplugged.

Note: This procedure applies only to Mac OS X version 10.5 (Leopard) and 10.6 (Snowleopard).

Most of the time, to use midd_secure, all you need to do is:

  1. Click on the AirPort icon (Airport icon.PNG) on the right end of the menu bar at the top of your screen.
  2. Select midd_secure from the list.
  3. Enter your username and password and click Mac ok button.PNG.
  4. After a few seconds you will be prompted to accept the College’s security certificate. Click Mac continue button.PNG.

However, if the above procedure does not work for you, try the steps below.

  1. Click on the AirPort icon (Airport icon.PNG) on the right end of the menu bar at the top of your screen and select Open Network Preferences. The Networkdialog box opens.
  2. Highlight AirPort and click on Advanced...
  3. Remove midd_secure from the list of Preferred Networks (click on the minus sign after selecting the name above)
  4. Click on the 802.1X tab.  Click the triangle to the left of User Profiles to display wireless configurations.
  5. If midd_secure is listed in the Configuration list, delete it using the instructions a-b below. If midd_secure is not listed, go to the next step.
    1. In the Configuration list select midd_secure.
    2. Click Remove (a minus sign) to delete.
  6. Click Add (a plus sign) to add a new configuration.
    1. In the Description field type midd_secure.
    2. In the User Name field enter your Middlebury College username.
    3. Leave the Password field blank as any subsequent password change would render this configuration unusable.
    4. In the Wireless Network field click the drop-down menu to select midd_secure.
    5. In the Authentication field select PEAP (PEAP should be the only option that has a checkmark).
    6. Click Mac ok button.PNG.
  7. After clicking Apply, close the Network dialog box.
  8. To connect to midd_secure click the AirPort icon (Airport icon.PNG) on the right end of the menu bar at the top of your screen and select midd_secure. You will be prompted to enter your username and password.

Note: Ensure that the "Use Passive FT Mode (PASV) box is unchecked in the Proxies tab for Advanced Network Preferences.


The midd_unplugged Wireless Network

BIG NOTE: Midd_unplugged is slower -- we've reserved much less bandwidth for it!

Midd_unplugged is the unsecured, open network on campus. Anyone can access it and it is not password-protected, meaning that it is more susceptible to intrusion than Midd_secure is. We recommend that students, faculty, and staff configure their computer to automatically connect to Midd_secure for standard computer usage, so that they are not open to an attacker potentially viewing their network communications. However, for quick internet access, midd_unplugged is quicker and easier to access than Midd_secure, which requires setup and password authentication.

Any operating system can connect to midd_unplugged if in range using its standard network manager.

Configure your Windows XP Computer for midd_unplugged

The midd_unplugged network can be used by those without a Middlebury College username and password. The network is outside the Middlebury College firewall.

Your Windows-based wireless network card should be ready once you’ve installed it. Please follow these instructions to verify a few network settings.

  1. Right-click My Network Places, and select Properties from the pop-up menu.
  2. Double-click Wireless Network Connection.
  3. Click Properties button.PNG.
  4. Click the Advanced tab.
  5. Verify that Internet Connection Sharing is turned off.
  6. Click the General tab.
  7. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in the Components field.
  8. Click Properties button.PNG.
  9. Verify that Obtain IP Address Automatically and Obtain DNS server address Automatically are bulleted.
  10. Click OK xp button.PNG.
  11. Restart your computer.


Configure your Macintosh OS X Computer for midd_unplugged

Follow the instructions that come with your card for installing the card in your laptop.

  1. Check for updates for your card.
    1. Click System Preferences on the doc or from the Mac apple menu.PNG menu select System Preferences.
    2. In the System section, click Software Update.
  2. Click Mac network icon.PNG.
  3. From the Show drop-down list, select AirPort.
  4. Click the AirPort tab
  5. Click the join network with best signal radio button to bullet it.
  6. Important: Verify that the checkbox for Allow this computer to create networks is not checked.
  7. Leave the checkbox for Show AirPort status in menu bar checked.
  8. Click the TCP/IP tab.
  9. From the Configure drop-down list, select Using DHCP.
  10. Mac apply now button.PNG.
  11. Restart your computer.
