Registering Supported Devices
While most devices can connect seamlessly to the MiddleburyCollege wireless network, gaming consoles, like Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch consoles, as well as media streamers and certain other devices that do not support enterprise WiFi security protocols, need to use the Middlebury-IoT WiFi network.
Such devices must be registered before they can be used on our network. The device's MAC address will be needed to complete the self service registration process. Once the device is registered, its MAC address will be recognized automatically and you will be able to connect it to the Middlebury-IoT network for Internet access with your personal password provided for this purpose while registering (this will also be emailed to you at that time).
An exhaustive list is not possible, but some examples of the devices that need to be registered are: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo DS, certain models of Kindle, and Nook. Smart TVs that only require Internet access should also be registered if they do not support username and password authentication. PLEASE NOTE: Kindly reboot the gaming console or other device after registering it. Rebooting the device and allowing it to reconnect to Middlebury-IoT is required for online gaming and streaming to work.
Note that Chromecast, wireless printers, "smart home" items (e.g., smart plugs and light bulbs), and any other devices that rely on being controlled by another wireless device, cannot be supported at this time. These devices require broadcast traffic that is not compatible with the requirements of our enterprise wireless infrastructure.
The MiddleburyCollege Wireless Network
This fast and secure network is available for use by anyone having a Middlebury College user name and password.
If you've mistakenly connected to the MiddleburyGuest wireless network, please delete it from your device to avoid automatically connecting to it.
Connect your iOS device to MiddleburyCollege

From the Home screen of your iOS device, select Settings.

From the Settings screen, select Wi-Fi.
- Make sure that Wi-Fi is ON, then select MiddleburyCollege from the Choose a Network... list.
- At the prompts, enter your Middlebury College e-mail address and password OR your Middlebury Guest Account credentials and then select Join.
- Click Trust for the InCommon certificate for the College's server.
- Wi-Fi should now reflect your connection to the MiddleburyCollege wireless network.
Connect your Mac OS X computer to MiddleburyCollege
- Click on the AirPort icon (
) on the right end of the menu bar at the top of your screen.
- Select MiddleburyCollege from the list.
- Enter your Middlebury College e-mail address and password OR your Middlebury Guest Account credentials then click JOIN.
- After a few seconds you will be prompted to accept the College’s security certificate. Click
.
- You will be asked to supply login credentials having administrator access to the computer. Enter valid credentials, then click Update Settings.
Connect your Windows computer to MiddleburyCollege
Windows 10
- Click the wireless icon (
) located on the far right of the task bar along the bottom of your screen.
- Click MiddleburyCollege, then click Connect.
- If you are prompted for Network Authentication, enter your Middlebury College e-mail address and password OR your Middlebury Guest Account credentials, then click OK.
- You will then be prompted with information regarding the Middlebury network certificate with a button for certificate details, click Connect to continue.
Setting up a Manual Connection
If you are using a computer that was issued by another institution, it is likely configured to attempt to connect to wireless with the same credentials you used to log in to the computer, which will not work on the Middlebury campus. To fix this, follow these instructions for setting up a manual connection on Windows 10.
Connect your Android or Chromebook device to MiddleburyCollege
These settings are also necessary for Chromebooks and other devices that require you to specify what type of security is in place.
- Find and select Settings on the screen of your Android or Chromebook device.
- From the Settings screen, select Wi-Fi and make sure it is ON.
- Select MiddleburyCollege from the list of available networks.
- On the pop-up menu make sure that the following settings are made. Note that you may need to scroll down to see all settings:
- EAP method - PEAP (leave as default)
- Phase 2 authentication - None (or MSCHAPV2)
- CA certificate - Use system certificates
- Online Cert. Status - Trust on First Use (or if that is not an option select: Do not validate)
- Domain - middlebury.edu
- Identity - (username) OR full Middlebury email address (username@middlebury.edu) OR Guest account full email address
- Anonymous identity - leave empty
- Password - your Middlebury account password OR Middlebury guest account password
- Connect and you should be on the MiddleburyCollege network! (the Comodo certificate may be presented while connecting - connect if you are in a location you expect to find Middlebury's wireless network)
*As of June, 2023, ChromeOS settings:
- Server CA Certificate: may need "Do not check"
- Subject Match: leave blank
- Subject alternative name match: leave blank
The MiddleburyGuest Wireless Network
Guests and others visitors who do not have a Middlebury College or eduroam username and password can access the Internet by selecting the MiddleburyGuest wireless network then following the prompts to accept the certificate and connect. For access to Middlebury resources (such as Canvas or Wordpress), a member of the Middlebury community must request a guest account for you through the Helpdesk.
- NOTE that there are traffic restrictions on the MiddleburyGuest wireless network; HTTP/HTTPS (web surfing) and most types of email connection should work, but some other protocols (SSH, POP, etc.) will not. Please contact the Helpdesk with any questions.
Gaming consoles can be connected only to the Middlebury-IoT network, not the typical MiddleburyCollege network. This is because the consoles do not support the authentication type that is present on the main network. The Middlebury-IoT network requires a user-specific password so you will need to complete the steps below in order to gain access.
- Obtain the MAC Address of the device following these instructions.
- Register your device at Self Service MAC Address Registration using the MAC Address that you found in Step 1 (if you are prompted for a password, use your Middlebury email and password like you would for WebMail etc...).
- Connect to the Middlebury-IoT network on your console now that you have registered the MAC address and have received a unique password to use with it, checking the box to "Remember Network" if asked.
- After connecting, reboot your device.

The eduroam Wireless Network
Eduroam has become very popular at Colleges and Universities in Europe as a way for faculty, staff and students to be able to access the Internet wirelessly while visiting other participating institutions. As a participating member of eduroam, we now offer wireless Internet access in a secure and reliable manner to eduroam-participating school members without having to have them register ahead of time. Likewise, our faculty, staff and students will have wireless Internet access while visiting at other participating institutions.
You will know you are at a participating institution if you see a network called eduroam listed. To use eduroam when traveling, you will need to enter your full username@middlebury.edu and password.
