Microsoft Office 365 Installation -- Home and Work

This article describes how to install Microsoft Office 365 on both College-owned (single user) computers and personally-owned home computers.

College-owned computers that are shared may be best suited to have a shared license version of Office (ex. Office 2019 or 2021) rather than the user-licensed 365 version.  Please click the blue Request Software Support button at right if you require assistance.

Windows

  • Windows users will be offered Office 365.
  • If your computer currently has an older version of MS Office, you should uninstall it (via Control Panel, Programs and Features) before attempting to install Office 365.  See related article, Find Your Microsoft Office Version Information.
  1. Go to http://www.office.com.
  2. Click Sign in (if prompted, choose use work or school account).
  3. Sign in using your Middlebury email address and password.
  4. Licensed users will see an Install Office button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.  Click this then choose Office 365 Apps.
    • Contact the Helpdesk if you believe you are a licensed user but the Install Office button is missing.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Mac

  1. Go to http://www.office.com.
  2. Click Sign in (if prompted, choose use work or school account).
  3. Sign in using your Middlebury email address and password.

Installation FAQs & Resources

Q: Who is covered by Middlebury College's Microsoft Office license?

A: Active faculty and students at Middlebury College, Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterey, Middlebury Language Schools and Breadloaf School of English are able to use the full Office 365 suite and download the applications onto their personal computers.  Active staff at these locations who use a computer for their daily work will also have the ability to download the full Office suite.

Populations not covered are inactive students, emeriti faculty, retirees, alumni, contractors, and short-term employees.

Q: I'm confused. Do I really want "Office 365 for business"?
