Creating Groups

After logging into the AD Group Manager you can create as many custom groups as you like. Groups can be created in the MIDD or MIIS container. The containers are just for organization, groups in either container can have members from both Middlebury and MIIS.

Please give your group a descriptive name so that you can identify it. Names can contain capital and lowercase letters, numbers, spaces, hyphens, and underscores.

Managing Groups

Only the group manager (by default, the person who created it) can change the membership of a group. You can pass off management of a group to another user, but if you do so you will lose the ability to manage the group yourself.

Group Availability

Groups created in the AD Group Manager get created in the Active Directory instantly. Individual applications however, sync their group information with the AD at different times. The AD Group Manager supports ping-backs to other applications to allow notification of group-changes if those applications support such notification.

Here are some general guidelines as to when groups will become available in various systems:

• Drupal - Our production Drupal instances support ping-backs, so groups should be available instantly unless a site-wide user-sync is happening (in which case the groups will be available at the end of the sync, about 10 minutes later).
• Segue - Groups should be available after logging out and logging back in.
• MediaWiki - Groups are available for administrator configuration immediately.
• Outlook - Because groups created with this tool do not have mailboxes, they do not show up in the default Outlook address book. While it is possible to find these groups in Outlook via other techniques, you will not have the proper security grants to manage the membership of your groups via Outlook and can currently only manage your group membership via the web interface.
