What is FAMIS?

FAMIS Maintenance Management, or FMM, includes management features for corrective and preventive maintenance, creating and tracking Work Orders. FAMIS Space Management, or FSM, provides additional management capabilities regarding space allocation, usage, and funding.

FAMIS uses the same technology as Banner and includes "forms" and "self service" components. Access to FAMIS Forms is limited to Facilities Services and a few other users across campus. FAMIS Self Service is currently not implemented.

Links on the right provide detailed installation instructions. NOTE: If you are accessing FAMIS from anywhere other than ON CAMPUS, you MUST use a VPN client (Virtual Private Network) to create a secure connection. If you do not have a VPN client on your computer, please visit the VPN_Setup_on_Windows,_Mac_and_Linux page.

Running FAMIS

Windows 7 with Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer 11 is the recommended browser for reliable FAMIS use.

  1. Start Internet Explorer and go to the FAMIS Production link, provided above.
  2. A "Security Warning" Dialog will appear asking if you wish to install Oracle JInitiator. Answer Yes.
    • You will only need to install JInitiator once. Each subsequent visit will take you directly to the Banner login dialog.
    • On occasion, there may be upgrades to JInitiator. If this happens, you will be prompted to re-install JInitiator. All you have to do is answer "Yes".
  3. You will be prompted to install JInitiator. Answer "Yes".
The "Oracle JInitiator" installer will run. Accept all defaults during the installation routine. (If installation of JInitiator fails, review the FAMIS FAQs below] and if this does not help, contact the Helpdesk at 802-443-2200 for assistance.)
  4. When installation has completed, you will be returned to your browser. FAMIS will appear in a separate window:
  5. Log in and use FAMIS!
    • Note: Do not close the original web browser window that opened your FAMIS window. If you close this browser window, your FAMIS session will end.

FAMIS FAQs / Troubleshooting

  • I'm having difficulty installing the Oracle jInitiator.
Many individuals have installed "pop-up blockers" on their desktop to prevent advertisements from popping up when they surf the internet. Unfortunately, a pop-up blocker may prevent plug-in installations from launching properly. To get around this, most pop-up blockers provide the ability to press the CTRL key while clicking a link to allow a pop-up. You may also be able to modify the settings of your pop-up blocker to allow pop-ups from particular locations, such as middlebury.edu. If you need assistance making these setting changes, please contact the Helpdesk at x2200.
  • When I click on a link in another application, such as email, I wind up moving away from FAMIS. How can I get links I click on to open in a new window?
You need to modify your browser set up so that links open in a new browser window. In Internet Explorer, select TOOLS. Select Internet Options and click on the Advanced tab. UN-check the box titled "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts." Click OK to apply.
  • I would like to have several FAMIS sessions open at once but am having difficulty doing so.
You should start additional FAMIS sessions from shortcuts on your desktop rather than from Internet Explorer favorites or links.
  • When attempting to run FAMIS, I get a pop-up message that says: "Attachment to a running Virtual Machine failed."
FAMIS uses Oracle jInitiator to render Forms over the internet. jInitiator uses a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) in this process. FAMIS isn't the only Java-based web application and there are different flavors of JVM software, so it is likely that you have more than one flavor on your system. Having multiple versions is not a problem, but sometimes attempting to launch a new application in a window where a different version is already running can be a problem.
If you encounter this error, open a completely new browser window and try again. You will not be able to use a browser window that was opened from a window that gives this error.

FAMIS changes with FSM

The initial implementation of FAMIS inlcuded only Maintenance Mangement (FMM). Adding Space Management (FSM) provides space-specific enhancements to FMM and a variety of new features.
