Additional Notes

  • 245 is the only title field that should contain an initial article
  • Remove Initial articles from all other title fields and set the filing indicator to 0
  • Remove initial articles from all $t's
  • A word is to be considered an article if it is an article in the language of the title or the phrase in the title, regardless of what language the item is in. If you think users will look under the article, add a 246 for this form.

Examples:
♦ La Serenata (Italian title, English item)
♦ El milagro and other stories
(Spanish phrase, English item)
♦ Die Kronung der Poppea
(German title, Italian item)

  • When the potential article is part of a proper name, check to determine the authorized form of the name in order to decide whether to treat it as an article.

Examples:
♦ De Stijl (an art movement). The authority record 110 is De Stijl. Therefore, do not treat it as an article.
♦ El Cid. The authority record is 100 Cid. Therefore, do treat it as an article. If you think users will look under the article (e.g. El Cid), add a 246 for this form
