Scanning negatives with the Nikon Scanners

Scanning Negatives

  • If you have problems with the scanner, close down all other programs and/or restart.
  • Photoshop should never be open while using the Nikon scanner.
  • Open Nikon Coolscan 4
  • Turn on scanner.
  • Unlock tray
  • On light table, load negatives in tray carefully, emulsion side down .
  • Lock tray, Blow off dust
  • With lead arrow first gently push in tray until there is pressure
  • Choose neg from thumbnails (parallel vertical lines)

  • Click Preview Button
  • Make selection of actual borders of neg by dragging cursor within photo
  • Click auto focus (checkerboard pattern)
  • Click auto exposure button (half black/half white circle)
  • Settings
    • Neg (color)
    • Calibrated RGB
  • Scanner
    • 8 Bit
  • Open and use Tool Palette I to change brightness, contrast, color, etc before
    • Keep this crop
    • Resolution 4,000 ppi (highest)
  • Scan
  • Save
    • Keep Scanner Name (you can rename when you save in Photoshop later)
    • Save to desktop
    • Tiff file
    • No compression
  • Eject film holder
