Windows Printing Issues

Word - print properties issue - some or all property page may not be displayed

Problem: When going to File => Print (in Microsoft Word) and clicking "Properties", you get the error message "some or all property page may not be displayed".

Solution: Delete the printer from Control Panel => Printers. Reinstall the printer. If this doesn't work, delete the printer, delete the cached copies of the printer drivers, reinstall the printer: How to delete cached copies of the printer drivers

PDF files are slow to print to certain PCL printers (Acrobat 7 on Windows)

This may also cause the printer to run out of memory and crash/stop printing.

Adobe has provided several solutions here: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=333091&sliceId=1

Here's one sample solution: Solution 3: Change the Print Optimizations setting to "Disabled".

1. Choose Start > Settings > Printers.

2. Right-click the printer you are using and choose Properties.

3. Click the Printing Preferences button.

4. Click the Advanced tab.

5. Under Document Options, choose Disabled next to Print Optimizations, and then click OK.

6. Click OK to close the printer properties window.

Print Spooler (spoolsv.exe) uses 100% of CPU

Computer running slow, spoolsv.exe using most of CPU resources.  Likely due to print jobs spooled which need to be cleared.  If cannot delete jobs, or jobs may be queued by another user of the computer, try the following - the last step is the key, but the spooler must be stopped first (step 1, or through Services in Computer Management):

1) start => run => net stop spooler

2) in cmd.exe type in:
del /f /s /q %temp%
del /f /s /q c:\temp
del /f /s /q c:\windows\temp
del /f /s /q c:\windows\system32\spool\printers\*.*
