This is a guide for writing enumeration on an item that has accompanying material.
Terms for accompanying materials: used in the enumeration field of the item record
Sound disc | May be shelved separately or together | CD |
3-1/2 inch magnetic disk | Always shelved separately so it won't be desensitized or erased; housed in Perm Reserve, Mus. Lib. Perm Reserve, or Armstrong Media | disk |
CD-ROM | May be shelved separately or together | CD-ROM |
Videocassette | Always shelved separately so it won't be desensitized or erased; housed in Media (Starr Perm Reserve), Mus. Lib. Perm Reserve, or Armstrong Media | video |
Accompanying guide, manual, etc. | Usually shelved together | Use the term best describing the item. E.g., "guide" "manual" (8 characters max.) |
Procedures for items shelved together in 1 location and in 1 container:
- Barcode: one (1 item record)
- Enumeration: none except copy or volume number. No special indication of accompanying material
Procedures for items shelved separately, either in the same location or in different locations (e.g., book is in library stacks & accompanying disk is in Perm Reserve; or book in stacks with accompanying CD-ROM next to it but separate on shelf)
- Barcode: one per item (separate item records)
- call number, and enumeration: write all on the accompanying material as well as to main item
- Copy or volume number: comes after the material type enumeration
Examples:
Call Number ________ CD |
Call Number ________ guide c. 2 |
Media Call Number ________ disk |
Call Number ________ video |
Cassettes (in small containers) & videos
- Accompanying cassettes are always stored separately in Media. Since they have their own class scheme, do not add enumeration term
- Videos are always stored separately in Media
- See also instructions for [/academics/lis/about/library_info/departments/collection_management_division/catalog_department/formats/sound_recordings/audiocassettes.htm Audiocassettes in small containers]
Music Library Materials
The Music Library now shelves accompanying CD's with books just like the Main Library. However, if more than one CD accompanies a book, they may want to shelve separately. In that case
- Add to the green location slip: CD to music circ desk
