Audio-Video Copying Services

Revision as of 12:43, 21 February 2013 by Petar Mitrevski (talk | contribs)

LIS offers a number of audio-video copying and conversion services. It is extremely important to remember that copyright issues with copying and conversion are very complex. Therefore we must reiterate that you need to obtain permission for the copying/conversion. Review the Copyright page and discuss your needs with your LIS liaison.

Important Notes

*No duplication will be done without written copyright permission or a determination by LIS that the requested copying should be considered fair use of the materials.

  • To get the best results (quality, longevity, etc.), look for a commercial copy in digital format (DVD, Blu-ray or web video.) You can request a commercial title to be purchased through LIS by using this form: go/request.
  • Converting from one format to another may result in some loss of quality.
  • Converting to a digital format will not result in a higher quality copy. However, converting to a digital format will allow you to keep using the material despite changes in the industry (see the The Analog Sunset page for more details about industry changes.)

Personal copies

*No duplication will be done without written copyright permission or a determination by LIS that the requested copying should be considered fair use of the materials.

  • Copies of lectures, classroom events, plays and talent shows, any events shot on campus with appropriate permissions
  • The requester must supply the video or audio master and good quality blank tape
  • The requester must supply the same number of blank tapes as there are masters
  • Copies will not be edited in any way (e.g. if two or more tapes of an event are recorded, there will be no editing of the tapes onto a single tape)
  • Language Schools must coordinate requests with their School’s bilingual assistant
  • Requests are usually filled within five business days of receipt of request.
  • Requests are limited to 3 copies MAX. We can recommend a 3rd party service if needed: http://www.vidsync.com/

Copies or excerpts for classroom use

Please follow the steps below to request the copying/conversion of analog media (VHS tapes, Laserdiscs, audio tapes or other) to a digital format (DVD or other) for classroom use. Please note that no duplication will be done without written copyright permission or a determination by LIS that the requested copying should be considered fair use of the materials.

  • Submit your request via the LIS Request form. If you have a long list of titles, special needs or specific questions, you can also contact your LIS liaison to discuss your request in detail.
  • The request will be reviewed by qualified LIS staff. We will try to find and obtain a commercial copy in the best format available.
  • Requests are usually filled within five business days of receipt of request.
  • If you need help in creating digital excerpts or clips, the Wilson Media Lab may be able to assist. Visit their home page for more assistance: go/dmt.
