Symptoms:  
 
* "Check for updates" button is grayed out.
 
* When I drag the Firefox icon to my applications folder it asks: "An older item named "Firefox" already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the newer one you are moving? I click replace. Then it tells me: The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items.

Solution:
 
* Uninstall Firefox: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox
 
* Install Firefox: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installing_Firefox
 
 
 
In particular, Mac OS X users should move the Firefox application from the Applications folder to the Trash, then download the latest Firefox version for their system and drag and drop it in the Applications folder.
