Problem: My changes to toolbars are not saving in Microsoft Word, what can I do?

Cause: Changes to your Normal.dot template seemingly aren't being saved. One thing which causes this is Acrobat 7.0 (the writer, not the reader). Do you have that installed?

Solution: The Acrobat 7 AddIn for Word is a COM AddIn and it flags Normal.dot as Saved so that your changes do not automatically get saved. You can explicitly save changes to your Normal.dot template in one of two ways:

  1. Go into the VBE, select a module in the Normal Project and then click Save
  2. In Word, press Shift then select File from the menu and select Save All (All includes Normal)

Alternatively you can stop the Acrobat AddIn loading by making a registry change - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins\('m not sure of the name of the Acrobat AddIn key but you'll recognise it). Change Value LoadBehaviour to 0. This just removes the AddIn, not Acrobat itself.
