Connect To Network Printers - Windows

To use a networked departmental printer you need to obtain its exact network print queue name. Look for a sticker on the printer showing this information. Co-workers and department coordinators may also be able to provide you with the needed name(s).

Once you have obtained the printer queue name(s), simply follow the steps below on your College-owned computer to connect to desired printers, then set a default printer that you will use most often.

  1. Press the Windows key + "R" to open the Run dialog box.
  2. In the Open field type \\walnut (or \\spruce for language schools printers), then click OK to view the full list of printers.
    • TIP: Save time using the exact printer name. Just type in \\walnut\printername (e.g.\\walnut\lib242), then click OK -- and you're done!
    • If you are unsure of the printer name you can use the search field at top right.
  3. Double-click a desired printer to install it.
    • Click the Install driver button if prompted.

Repeat the above steps for each printer you would like to add then following directions below to set your default printer.

Set Your Default Printer using Windows 7

If you have added more than one printer you should verify (and reset if necessary) the correct printer as the default printer you use most often.

  1. Click Windows Orb.png then select Devices and Printers in the right-hand portion of the menu.
  2. In the Printers and Faxes section, right-click the desired printer then select Set as default printer from the pop-up menu.

Commonly Used Print Servers

  • Walnut -- Has replaced Bombay. Queues for printers having different Windows 7 compliant drivers and queues that support 64-bit windows will typically be created on Walnut.
  • Spruce -- Queues for Language Schools printers
  • Papercut -- Queues for public printers
  • Bombay -- Obsolete printing server.


The above steps will not work properly if the computer is a) not bound to the middlebury.edu domain (only should apply to college-owned computers) or b) is not logged in with a network account with printing privileges.
