Viewing Room

Description

The FMMC Viewing Room is a two seat computer lab that supports Film and Media Culture production courses. The room is equipped with specialty software and hardware for advanced media conversion and compression and is set up to playback most media formats including 3/4, LaserDisc, Hi8, Multistandard VHS, Multiregion DVD, miniDV, and HDV. The Viewing Room is intended for small group screenings, for critical analysis with faculty members, for advanced media cross conversions, console gaming session captures, or as overflow for the FMMC Multimedia Lab.

  • Launch Final Cut Pro.
  • Review the FCP Setup instructions, but use the following settings for "Easy Setup":

Composite Input (3/4, Hi8, LD, DV, VHS, PS2)

V4HD - DVCPro 480 29.97 (720 x 480)

Component Input (Xbox)

V4HD - Apple ProRes 422 1080 29.97 (1920 x 1080)

  • Review the Log and Capture instructions. Most of the legacy decks in the Viewing Room are non-controllable which means you will need to use the transport controls on the player itself rather than controlling it within Final Cut Pro. Press Play on the player and then select "Capture Now" within the Final Cut Pro "Log and Capture" window. Capture large chunks or entire tapes rather than individual clips. Break the large chunks of media into smaller clips by setting in and out points and selecting Modify->Make Subclip or by pressing Apple + U.
