What is Middlebury Google Apps?
Middlebury Google Apps is part of Google Apps for Education, a suite of web-based Google services. The following services are included in Middlebury Google Apps and will be available to you once your Middlebury Google account is created:
- Google Docs (similar to Word/Pages)
- Google Sheets (similar to Excel/Numbers)
- Google Slides (similar to PowerPoint/Keynote)
- Google Drive (similar to MiddCloud)
- Google Groups
- Google Calendar
- Google Sites
What is Google Docs?
Google Docs is an online word processing tool. It is similar to Microsoft Word, but documents are stored in the Cloud and no downloads are needed. Documents can be shared with other users, who can edit and comment on them simultaneously from anywhere with an Internet connection. In education, Google Docs have been used for paper writing and project collaboration, sharing handouts, peer feedback on writing, and more. Google Docs can sometimes also refer colloquially to the larger suite of Google web-based services properly called Google Apps (see above).
Google Apps Accounts
Do I have a Middlebury Google Apps account?
As of early 2016 accounts are created by request only. If you try to login and get an "Invalid Email" or similar error, most likely you do not have a Middlebury Google Apps Account.
How do I get a Middlebury Google Apps account?
If you are a faculty member who would like to use Google Docs for your class, email email@example.com. Otherwise to request an individual account contact the helpdesk. Please be aware that if you have used your @middlebury.edu address for stand-alone Google services (ie. not through a Middlebury Google Apps Account), this will result in a conflicting account — see below.
Middlebury Google Apps accounts are created for classes or by individual request. In the future, accounts may also be provisioned automatically. In either case, this may result in what Google refers to as a "Conflicting Account" for those who have been using Google services with an account tied to your Middlebury address but not provisioned by ITS.
Do I need to do anything now?
After the transition, any documents (Docs, Sheets, Slides, or files in Google Drive) you created with your personal account will be transferred to a new personal account (using either a new Gmail address or another non-Middlebury email address you specify) to resolve the conflict. Afterwards, you will not be able to transfer ownership of these documents to anyone on the middlebury.edu domain. So if you have any documents under a personal stand-alone account with institutional data that should remain associated with the College, you need to transfer ownership to someone with a Middlebury Google Apps account before yours gets created.
How can I tell if the account I’m using now is a personal or institutional account?
Try logging out and logging in again. If you enter your Google account password at Google’s login page, that’s a personal stand-alone account and the above considerations apply. If instead you enter your Middlebury e-mail and password at our new login page, that’s an institutional account and you’re all set.
Can I still access Google’s services for my personal use?
You can choose to maintain a separate account for your personal use of any Google services under a non-middlebury.edu address. If you have multiple Google accounts, the username that appears at the upper right corner of most Google services will help you ensure that you’re using the intended account.

How do I log in?
- Visit https://drive.google.com/a/middlebury.edu
- You will be redirected to a Middlebury login page. Enter your full Middlebury e-mail address and password to continue.
How do I create a Google Doc?
Go to http://docs.google.com and click the plus sign (near the top of the screen, or in a circle in the lower-right corner).

From the Google Doc you wish to share, click Share. You can choose to share with specific individuals, a Google Group, anyone at Middlebury, or anyone with the link.
You can also specify whether others can view only, comment, or edit the document.

If you are logged in with a personal Google account, try accessing the document from your Middlebury Google account. If that doesn't work, contact the owner of the document for permission to view.
How do I request Google Docs for my class?
Email firstname.lastname@example.org with your course number to get started.
Why doesn't my Google Apps class list (Groups) match my roster?
Google Apps class lists are not linked to your roster in Banner. Google Apps class lists are updated manually. Contact email@example.com if you need students added or removed from your Google Apps class list.
How do I use the Google Apps class list (Groups)?
You can send email to and share Google Docs with your class list.
To view and edit the members of your class list:
- Visit to groups.google.com.
- Click My Groups.
- Click middlebury.edu
- Click on your group name.
- Click Members.
Check your Google Apps class list (Groups) to make sure the student is on it. If the student is not on your class list, add them to your class list (Groups) or email gadmin@middlebury and request they be added.
If the student is on your Google Apps class list, it's possible the student is trying to view the Google Doc from a personal Google account, rather than from their Middlebury Google account. You can either share the Doc with their personal account, or request they view the Doc from their Middlebury Google account.
If the student does not remember their Middlebury Google login information, ask them to look for a welcome email with temporary login information, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
