Install the Interactive Reporting Web Client

In order to run Hyperion Reports you will need to install the latest Interactive Reporting Web Client (aka Hyperion Client). The Hyperion Client is built-into the standard Middlebury College image, therefore, normally it does not need to be installed (it's already there!). If a new version is available, it is distributed automatically. See the system requirements section above before attempting to install Hyperion manually. Hyperion can be manually installed by visiting http://go.middlebury.edu/hyperion?prod. You will need to enable popups if you haven't done so already. Log in to the webpage that appears and click Tools => Install Interactive Reporting Web Client and follow the instructions. As a last resort, Hyperion can be found on Hottub server at [file://hottub/irwc/install.bat \\hottub\irwc\install.bat] 

NOTE: If you are accessing Hyperion from anywhere other than ON CAMPUS, you MUST use a VPN client (Virtual Private Network) to create a secure connection. If you do not have a VPN client on your computer, contact the Helpdesk at x2200.

Re-Install the Interactive Reporting Web Client:

  1. Open Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs
  2. Uninstall the entry for “Hyperion Interactive Reporting Web Client”
  3. Once completed select No to restart the machine
  4. Delete the following files from the C:\WINDOWS directory:
    • Bqformat.ini
    • Bqformat_ev.ini
  5. Next remove any and all folders with Hyperion associated files.
    (Note: If desktop client tools or any other products are installed, such as the IR Studio, skip this step. You can check GAL to see whether you are a member of "LIS Hyperion Explorer".)
    • Check for a Hyperion folder under C:\Documents and Settings\*userprofile*\
    • Check for Hyperion or Brio folders on the root of C:\ or in C:\Program Files
  6. Once all files and folders have been removed restart the machine
  7. Run the installer from the Hyperion menu Tools -> Install -> Interactive Reporting Web Client

Hyperion browser compatibility

Firefox and Hyperion

Firefox versions 2.0 - 3.3 will work with Hyperion. Officially, only version 2.0 is supported but it will run on 3.3.

Enable pop-ups in Internet Explorer to ensure Hyperion compatibility

Hyperion needs to open certain screens in a pop-up window, so you need to configure your browser to allow pop-ups for Hyperion. In brief:

  • add *.middlebury.edu to the trusted sites
  • add *.middlebury.edu to the list of allowed pop-ups

Hyperion and Internet Explorer 8

Internet Explorer 8 will only work with Hyperion 9.3.3 Service Pack.  This service pack was implemented here at Middlebury on 11/9/2010.  Versions of Hyperion prior to this service pack will not run. 

There is a setting in IE you can change for the Intranet Zone that renders the cascading Workspace navigation menus.

If you need to roll-back IE8 to IE7 then perform the following steps:


Oracle does not support running Hyperion on IE 8 yet.

If you installed the IE8 update via Automatic Updates, you can roll back to IE7. If you need assistance with these steps, please contact the helpdesk.

To Uninstall IE8 and revert to the previous version:

  1. Go to Start> Control Panel
  2. Add or Remove Programs
  3. Select to remove Windows Internet Explorer 8
  4. Reboot your computer
  5. Open Internet Explorer 7
  6. Go to Tools > Internet Options > Security > Reset all zones to default level
  7. Go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Restore advanced settings > Reset
  8. Restart IE

You may still get prompted to install the update via Automatic Updates.

Stop Automatic Updates from reinstalling IE8

  1. Select Custom Install
  2. Uncheck Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP
  3. Check Don’t notify me about these updates again if you do not want to be prompted again to install IE8.

Hyperion troubleshooting & common problems

Most problems with Hyperion can be resolved by uninstalling and reinstalling the Hyperion Client.

To uninstall:

  1. Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs
  2. uninstall the Hyperion Intelligence Client

To reinstall:

  1. Go to the Hyperion server: http://go.middlebury.edu/hyperion?prod
  2. navigate to a report (will have a BQY extension)
  3. you will be prompted to install the client.
  4. If you have a pop-up blocker on your web browser, it will block the client installation.

Hyperion client re-installs every time I log in

In some cases, Internet Explorer won't "remember" the Interactive Web Reporting Client. As soon as you close Internet Explorer, the install will be erased and you'll have to wait a minute while the client re-installs next time you open Hyperion. While this is just an annoyance, the time involved can add up. To solve this problem:

  1. Close any Internet Explorer windows you have open right now.
  2. Open Internet Explorer and log on to Hyperion. Don't run a report yet.
  3. In the Hyperion menu bar, go to Tools -> Install -> Interactive Web Reporting Client.
  4. The Hyperion client installer should appear in a small pop-up window. Ignore it for the moment.
  5. Look carefully in the Internet Explorer window behind it, at the top, for a yellow bar that says something like "Internet Explorer has blocked an ActiveX control...". Click on this bar, then click on Run ActiveX control.
  6. IE will ask you if you are sure you want to run the installer. Click Run.
  7. Follow through with any other open dialog boxes, then you should be redirected back to the Hyperion login page.
  8. Log in again, and try running a report. If all works correctly, the installer won't appear and you'll be good to go.

Hyperion does not install under non-admin accounts

During the install process, Hyperion does not ask for admin rights; there's no indication that it needs them, the installer page just stays on "checking status". Temporarily granting admin privileges to the account resolves the problem. I had to install Hyperion under the account in question, while I could install it from our usual admin account, the account in question would not see the installation.

Hyperion Client refuses to install: problem with certificate

You can work around the certificate error by ensuring that Internet Explorer's settings are configured correctly:

  1. Open internet explorer, click Tools - Internet Options.
  2. Click the Security tab - Custom Level button.
  3. Under ActiveX options, ensure the following settings are set as follows:
    • Run ActiveX and plug-ins - Enabled
    • Download Signed ActiveX Control - Enabled
    • Script ActiveX controls marked as safe for scripting - Enabled
    • Download unsigned ActiveX Control - Prompt
    • Initialize and script ActiveX controls not mark as safe - Prompt
  4. Click OK, then Apply, then OK.
  5. Close and restart the browser. You should now be able to install Hyperion from the website (go/hyperion).

For Helpdesk staff, there are instructions for installing from a direct server folder (for SRPs only).

Other troubleshooting tips

If Hyperion still won't work, here are some things to try.

  • Clear the SSL cache in Internet Explorer (Internet Explorer => Tools => Internet Options => click on the Content tab, then click "Clear SSL state").
  • Check the date on the computer. If the date is incorrect, the computer may think that the certificate has expired. Correct the date and try again.
  • Visit http://update.microsoft.com and review the optional updates. There may be a "root certificates" update that has not been installed. Reboot after installing that and try again.
  • Clear temp files (Internet Explorer => Tools => Internet Options => on the main/general tab click "Delete Files" or "Delete" (when prompted put a checkmark next to "all files").

Hyperion Runs But Reports Open in a Blank Grey Screen

If Hyperion was just installed, close the web browser and restart. If this does not resolve the issue then proceed to the following.

Cause: Most likely Internet Explorer 7 and Hyperion 9 are conflicting in some way.

Solution:

  1. Uninstall hyperion from Add/Remove programs.
  2. Reboot.
  3. Install Hyperion.
