Record audio with an iPod

The iPods you rent out from the Circulation Desk come with an iTalk recorder that you attach to the iPod to record with. Instructions on how to record media are here.

Download audio recordings to a computer

Often you will want to acquire an audio recording without syncing the iPod to iTunes, which would erase all music on the device. Fortunatuly you can manually grab the recording files.

  1. Connect the iPod to the computer and open iTunes.
  2. Click on the iPod in the iTunes location panel. If the iPod is not linked with this computer, iTunes will ask you if you want to erase all files on the iPod and sync it. No, you don't want to.
  3. Look for and enable the option to "manually manage this iPod". That will make the iPod appear in Finder.
  4. Close iTunes. In Finder, find the iPod and look for a "Recordings" folder. This is where your recording will be, and you can copy it to some other location.

Warning: Recordings are stored as plain WAV files and thus are really really big, as in 10 MB per minute of recording. Plan accordingly.
