General Information

Definition: an integrating resource is a bibliographic resource that is added to or changed by means of updates that do not remain discrete and are integrated into the whole. Integrating resources can be continuing or finite. Examples include updating looseleafs, updating databases, and updating web sites.

  • Continuing: issued over time in a series of iterations with no predetermined conclusion. (Most integrating resources are continuing.)
  • Finite: Issued over time with a predetermined conclusion; intended to be completed in a finite number of iterations. (Single-event Web sites are common finite integrating resources.)

Basis of description

  • Exception 1: dates of publication are based on first &/or last iterations
  • Exception 2: notes, numbers, & terms of availability are based on all iterations and any other source.

Chief source of information: the entire resource itself (which means that you will seldom need to bracket information). Prefer the source that provides the most complete information.

When to make new record

  • For integrating resources, most changes are considered minor & don't require making a new bib record
  • When the original URI [Uniform Resource Identifier] is no longer accessible, but the resource is now accessible at another URI, edit the existing record to reflect this.
  • When the original URI is still active but now represents an entirely different resource, create a new record for the new electronic resource.
