Troubleshooting Browser Connection Issues

While other browsers may display many INB forms properly, Internet Explorer (versions 7, 8 and 9) are most widely tested, and should therefore be used when possible.

Troubleshooting Banner INB with Internet Explorer Problems

Below is an outline of the proper triage and corrective measures to resolve INB/IE problems.  These steps should be performed in the order presented here.Pop-up-settings.PNG

  1. Pop-up Blocker Exception list - if there is a pop-up blocker in IE make sure that *.middlebury.edu is in the Exceptions list. 

        a.     From the Tools menu of Internet Explorer point to Pop-up Blocker, then select Pop-up Blocker Settings.

        b.     If *.middlebury.edu is not in the Allowed Sites list, type *.middlebury.edu in the Address of Web site to allow Add button.PNG.

        c.     Close the IE browser and restart it -- did the problem go away?

  1. Google Toolbar and other browser plug-ins -

Does IE have extra toolbars such as Yahoo, Hot Bar and Go Search?  If so, uninstall them.

        a.     Trace the menu path Windows_Start_Button | Settings | Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs.  This page takes a few seconds to populate.

        b.     Select the toolbar software to be removed and click Remove button.PNG.

         c.   After removal, close and open new IE Browser - did problem go away?

  1. Tools - Manage Add-ons: Disable all add-ons, not just those that provide toolbars - even the Adobe PDF add-ons may be problematic.

        a.    In IE, from the Tools menu select Manage Add-ons.

        b.    Select add-ons from the list then click the Disable radio button.

        c.    Click[[Image:Ok_button.jpg when all add-ons have been disabled.

  1. Create and use desktop shortcuts to links below, rather than opening browser window first. http://go.middlebury.edu/inb?prod and http://go.middlebury.edu/hyperion?prod

         a.    Right-click on your desktop and point to New on the pop-up menu, then select Shortcut from the submenu.

         b.    In the Type the location of the item field for the shortcut type the links exactly as they appear below including the quotation marks.

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" http://go.middlebury.edu/inb?prod  and "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" http://go.middlebury.edu/hyperion?prod

        c.    Click Next button.PNG.

        d.    In the Type a name for this shortcut field enter a name such as INB Prod.

        e.    Click Finish button.PNG.

  1. Reset Security options in Internet Explorer:

        a.    From the Tools menu select Internet Options.

        b.    Click the Security tab.

        c.    Select the security zone the IE Browser is running the INB product in - you can determine this zone by looking at the bottom status bar of IE Browser when in INB main page - it will say, "Internet", "Local Intranet", Trusted", etc

        d.    Click Default level button.PNG to reset it to baseline. 

        e.    Click Apply button.PNG.

        f.    Click Ok button.jpg.

        g.    Open a new browser and see if INB issue was corrected.
