Keychain Problems

"The system was unable to unlock your login keychain" alert after logging in

This is expected after you change your College password, because you have changed it in our systems but not yet on your computer's hard drive. You should click "Update Keychain Password" to enter your old password, then your new one as prompted. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3799 for more info.

Reset Keychain

If Keychain First Aid finds an issue that it cannot repair, or if you do not know your keychain password, you may need to reset your keychain. (Resetting a keychain sets aside the original default keychain file and creates a new one.) Instructions for resetting your keychain are available at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1544

I keep getting prompted for a keychain password on my Mac, how do I disable that?

Problem: You are constantly prompted to enter your "login" or "admin" keychain password

Cause: This usually occurs when your keychain password (set automatically when your user account was created on your computer) and your default keychain (usually "login") are no longer in-sync. This can be caused by using a password reset utility to reset the password of your account, or by changing your College password. Normally, this can be fixed automatically when you login (see above); if not, follow these instructions.

Solution 1:

Double-click Macintosh HD, double-click Applications, double-click Utilities, double-click "Keychain Access".

  1. From the edit menu select "Change password for keychain login".
  2. You will be prompted to enter your Current Password - the system is asking you here to enter your current KEYCHAIN password (NOT your current computer/login password). Your current keychain password is most likely your old College password, or your old computer/login password. Try entering that.
  3. Use your current College password, or your current computer/login password to fill out the other two boxes.

If you are not sure what your Current Keychain Password is, try any passwords you used in the past or recently. If you are still unable to change your keychain password, follow the instructions in Solution 2, below.

Solution 2: Delete the "login" keychain.

WARNING: This will delete any items stored in the login keychain. However, if you cannot remember your keychain password, there is no way to access anything in the keychain, anyways.

Go to: Applications -> Utilities ->Keychain Access Select the "login" keychain in the upper left corner. Note: you might have to click "Show keychains" in the lower left corner before you'll see a list of keychains From the File menu select "Delete keychain 'login'" When prompted select the "Delete keychain and Reference files" option Log off and log back in. The login keychain should be recreated and it should no longer prompt you for a password. You will need to add all your passwords onto your keychain again; if you wish to do this, as you access various resources with a username & password, check the box that says "save password on my keychain." This will add that password to your keychain for future use.
