Guidelines for Setting Library Hours

Library hours are subject to change; reduced staffing and budget resources may require reduced hours

Guiding Principles
Primary guiding principle: Match college calendar - closed when college is officially closed

• Significantly reduce open hours during semester and holiday breaks
• Hours at branch libraries the same when possible, varying only when use statistics warrant a difference
• Main Library will stay open longer than the branches when use statistics and activity warrant
• The Main Library - extended hours during Fall and Spring semester exam periods and last week of classes (TBD on a semester-by-semester basis)
• The Music Library - open regular hours during Fall and Spring semester exam periods
• Armstrong Library - hours may be extended on weekends during exams if use activity and exam schedules indicate a need (TBD on a semester by semester basis)
• Fall Midterm break and Winter Carnival break - reduce hours at Main Library; close Armstrong and Music Libraries
  
• Closed on Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving
  

Summer

• Closed on July 4th
  
• Reduced hours the first 2 weeks of LS
  

Routine Processes

• Review activity, user stats and staffing resources to determine changes to hours; regularly evaluate for possible budget savings Remind the community in advance when hours will vary from routine – Exams, break periods, Holidays
• Regularly alert the user community – all staff/faculty/student - to any change in the regular library hours – spring break, fall break, Thanksgiving, Exams, Holidays, inter-session periods
  
• Provide advance notice and consult with constituent and user groups regarding library hours; consult with Scheduling
• Announcements will be generated from the Office of LIS Administration to all fac/staff/students
  
• By email - 1 week in advance; by web/blog if possible
• Post regular summer hours (in addition to regular AY hours) on the web; and on the LIS blog
• Post signage at doors and service points to remind the community of upcoming varying hours – 1 week in advance
• Update hours on web
  
• Include Technology Helpdesk hours in email announcements and signage
• Notify Public Safety
• Notify Library Cafe

Exceptions:

• Open 7:45 am - 8 pm on days that classes end and break begins at 4:15; regular semester hours on the Friday of LS graduation
• Mon. – Fri. open 9 am – 5 pm during break periods
• Sat & Sun - closed for break periods between semesters - EXCEPT Feb Celebration, May Graduation, and Alumni weekend, and the weekend after Language Schools end
• Spring recess hours 9 am – 5 pm
• Sat & Sun open 9 – 5 pm for break periods within semesters
• Fall Orientation 8 AM - 8 PM
  
• Open reduced hours the day before academic year classes resume/begin (activity levels suggest we consider 1 pm - 10 pm)
  
• Open  8 - 8 day before LS 9-week session
  
• Reduce hours during fall mid-term break and spring carnival break

Close at 5 pm on days that classes end/recess begins at 4:15
M - F 9 - 5 pm during break periods & orientation
Sat & Sun - closed during breaks between semesters.  Open at 4 pm on Sundays for breaks within a semester.
Closed the week that the college holiday break begins – until 1st day of Winter Term classes

Exam Period 

Music - Regular hours

Armstrong - extend hours at Armstrong until 12 midnight the Fri of the exam period - ONLY if needed to accomodate exam schedule; extended hours on a Saturday will match the earliest or latest exam in Bi-Hall. So if the exam is scheduled from 7-10, Armstrong will close at 10 pm. If there are no exams, or they finish before 6, regular hours will be in effect.

Main Library open 24/7; to be evaluated on a semester by semester basis pending budget and stats review

Middlebury College Access card required for entry during exam period outside regular hours to prioritize facility use for primary users.
