Downloading MARC Records from Online Vendor Sites (like Oxford)

Edit/Prepare records via MarcEdit

  1. Download file from Vendor/publisher website: Usually you have the option to Open or Save with Marcedit. You save a step or two by choosing "Open with MarcEdit."
  2. Using MarcEdit once opened:
  • MarcEdit Input file: should already be filled in with the file link
  • MarcEdit output file: click Browse, choose location to download, then name file & save
  • Back to MARC tools window, click Execute. Then click Close. Saves as MARC text file (using mrk extension). This will allow you to view records and make changes.
  • Go to downloaded file and click  to open
  • If necessary, make changes to records:
    • From top toolbar, choose Tools/AddDelete fields, etc. (e.g., 655 Electronic books). From this same menu you can also edit subfields and indicators.
    • From top toolbar, chooseEdit/FindReplace, etc. (856 ezproxy prefix)
  • Next, change file format from mrk to mrc:
    • From top toolbar, choose File/Compile file into MARC
    • Give file a name & save
    • Creates/saves on desktop with mrc extension
  • Close MarcEdit
