Mac OS X Mavericks (10.9.x), released on 22 October 2013. Apple has posted a complete list of what's new in Mavericks.

OS X Mavericks (10.9.x) is available as an upgrade for Faculty and Staff who are currently running Mountain Lion (10.8.x). If your machine is running Mountain Lion (10.8.x) the upgrade will appear automatically in Software Updates under the Apple Menu. If your machine is running Snow Leopard (10.6.x) or Lion (10.7.x), you will need to contact the Technology HelpDesk to discuss upgrade options.

As with all operating system upgrades, there are potential issues of compatibility with applications and services and we will post information as it becomes available. Mavericks has several improvements, including better support of multiple monitors, and more automated software updating. Public labs will be updated to Mavericks before the 2014-2015 academic year.

Current Known Issues & Areas of Concern

  1. Generally speaking, there are very few upgrade issues for current users of 10.7 or higher when moving to 10.9. Those running 10.6 or older should verify that they can upgrade all "PowerPC" applications to run on the Intel processors Apple has used for years.
  2. If you are running FinalCut Pro X...
    • ...you will be offered an upgrade (10.1) to FinalCut Pro X. WARNING: If you perform this upgrade, your files will no longer be compatible with older versions of the software, including the version found in all campus labs.
    • ... a new feature called AppNap may interfere with the background rendering. This feature can be disabled but will require assistance from the Technology HelpDesk.
  3. Some Adobe products will need updates. Please see this article for details.
  4. VPN - NetConnect does not work and has been replaced with Junos Pulse.
  5. On some models, there are reports of corrupt display artifacts (a distorted rainbow effect or shadows appear). This is caused by a graphics card incompatibility and can be corrected by going to Systems Preferences > Energy Saver and deselecting the "automatic graphics switching."
  6. Peculiar issue with "Printer Status" 'print jobs' generated on Xerox ColorQube printer with OS 10.8 seems to have disappeared with OS 10.9. (in 10.8, deleting those 'jobs' allows the actual print job to print)
  7. Mac OS 10.6 and below supported legacy PowerPC applications - upgrading to 10.7 and higher drops "Rosetta" compatibility mode for those applications. Contact the helpdesk for more information.
