Mac OS X Sierra Mac OS X Sierra (10.12.x) released to the public on September 20, 2016. This page will be updated as new developments arise.

As with all operating system upgrades, there are potential issues of compatibility with applications and services. If you have a question as to whether an application you are using will be compatible with Sierra, please check with the Helpdesk or with the application vendor. There is a block on Sierra installation to college-owned Macs running versions of Parallels, Matlab, EndNote and FileMaker that are not fully supported by Sierra. If you have a computer with one of these applications and would like to install Sierra, please create a software installation ticket at http://go.middlebury.edu/whd, providing us with the Property of Middlebury College number of the computer.

Current Known Issues & Areas of Concern

  1. Parallels - El Capitan and Sierra are not fully compatible with Parallels versions below 11. Users who choose to upgrade to El Capitan or Sierra can still access Windows in Bootcamp by holding down Option while booting, then selecting the Bootcamp partition, but access to a Bootcamp partition will not work with earlier versions of Parallels.
  2. MATLAB -- Sierra introduces changes that impact many non-United States regions and locales. MATLAB versions below R2016B are not completely compatible.
  3. Hindenburg -- update to version 1.6 before upgrading to Sierra. Otherwise, a reinstall will be needed - with more information available at [1]
  4. Adobe Photo Downloader -- El Capitan and Sierra do not recognize USB-connected cameras from within the Photo Downloader application. You may use the 'File>>Import from Device' option in Adobe Bridge as a workaround.
  5. Thomson Reuters EndNote X7 -- Sierra is not fully compatible. EndNote X8 should be fully macOS Sierra compatible, scheduled availability November 2016.
  6. FileMaker Pro -- Sierra requires FileMaker Pro version 15 for compatibility. To maintain compatibility with other users sharing data, please consult with the helpdesk before upgrading to macOS Sierra.
