New page

Picture manager can be a useful tool for organizing and viewing images, as well as for basic editing of images in .bmp, .emf, .jpg, .png, .tif, .wmf formats. It will also let you compress files in most of these formats and convert from one format to another.

== Getting Started ==

To launch picture manager:

# Click Start
# Programs
# Microsoft Office
# Microsoft Office Tools
# Microsoft Office Picture Manager

== Creating Shortcuts ==

Picture manager allows you to add shortcuts so you do not need to keep opening files each time you use it. A shortcut to My Pictures within My Documents is already created, but you can create your own shortcuts.

===To add a shortcut choose:===

# File
# Add a picture shortcut
# Then navigate to the folder you want

===To add shortcuts automatically choose:===

# File
# Locate pictures
# Enter a location to look in
# Click OK

You can delete any shortcuts you don’t want by right clicking on them and choosing:

Remove shortcut
Do NOT select Delete, which will delete the actual folder and any files in it.

==Different Views==

There are three ways to view your images. Thumbnail View will allow you to see each image in miniature. Filmstrip View will display the images along the bottom of the screen, but the selected image will be enlarged and positioned above. Single Picture View will display only the selected image. The view buttons are located under the toolbar or you can use the view menu.

==Zooming In or Out==

To change the magnification level gradually:
* Use the Zoom Slider

To view an image at a specific percentage:
# On the Standard toolbar
# Click the dropdown arrow next to the Zoom box
# Select the setting you want

==Editing an Image==

To edit or adjust an image:

# Select the image
# Select Single Picture View

You can specify how you want to crop the image.
* Use the Aspect Ratio if you want to maintain the ratio between the height and width, otherwise set it to None
* Use the Cropping Handles and drag the bars to the desired places or set the amount of pixels you want to crop to.

# In Edit Pictures task pane, click on Resize
# From the Resize task pane choose either

# Select image
# Select single picture view
# In Edit Pictures task pane, click on compress pictures
# Select the desired compression option
# To manually adjust the Contrast (the difference between the darkest and lightest areas), move the Contrast slider or enter a number in the box
# To manually adjust Midtones (tones in an image that are in the middle of the tonal range, between the lightest and the darkest tones), move the midtones slider or enter a number in the box
# To manually adjust Hightlights (the brightest or lightest areas), click More next to Advanced Settings, move the highlight slider or enter a number in the box
# To manually adjust Shadows (the darkest areas), click More, next to Advanced Settings and move the shadows slider or enter a number in the box

# In Edit Pictures task pane, click Color
# To automatically adjust the color balance, click Enhance Color, then click an area of the image that should be white
# To manually adjust the Hue intensity(hue is the color attribute that most readily distinguishes one color from other colors, also its name), move the amount slider or type a number in the box
# To manually adjust the Hue color, move the Hue slider or type a number in the box
# To manually adjust the Saturation (amount of purity in a color determined by its movement away from gray), move the Saturation slider or type a number in the box

# To make a color picture black and white, type -100 in the in the Saturations box or move the slider all the way to the left

==Fix Red Eye==

# Select image
# Select single picture view
# In Edit Pictures task pane, click Red Eye Removal
# Click on all the red eyes you want to fix
# If you want to clear the eye markers, click Reset Selected Eyes
# Click OK

==Undoing Changes==

If you make a change you don’t like or want to back up multiple steps, you can use the Undo Button on the toolbar or

# Undo
Changes are not permanent until they are saved.
