Important Details about MS Office 365

  • This version of Microsoft Office is only for use on personally-owned computers. Do not use this installer on College-owned computers.
  • Full MS Office 365 functionality, such as OneDrive storage and access to web-based versions of applications, is not available at this time. Additional features will be phased in.
  • The Middlebury College Helpdesk does not provide technical support for installs on personally-owned computers and devices. Please be sure you read all requirements and instructions before installing. You agree to install Office at your own risk and, should you encounter issues, you will need to seek assistance from a third party.

Obtain the Installer from Office 365

To obtain the installer click the appropriate link below to review important information, then follow the steps.

When the Office 365 portal asks you to sign in, enter your Middlebury College email address. You will be redirected to a Midd-branded log in page where you will need to provide your email password.

  • Do not use this installer on College-owned computers!
  • Windows users will be offered Office 2016; Office 2013 may also be offered.
  • If your computer currently has an older version of MS Office, you should uninstall it (via Control Panel, Programs and Features) before attempting to install Office 2016.
  1. Go to http://www.office.com
  2. Click "Sign in" (if prompted, choose "use work or school account")
  3. Sign in using your Middlebury email address and password
  4. Click the "Install Office 2016" button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation

  • Do not use this installer on College-owned computers!
  • Macs running 10.10 (Yosemite) or above will receive Office 2016; Macs running 10.9 (Mavericks) or below will receive Office 2011. Be sure to run Office updates available through the Help menu of any Office program.
  • If you receive a security warning when trying to run the Office installer, control-click (or right-click) the downloaded app then choose Open from the menu. On the ensuing dialogue box, choose Open as well. These actions will exempt the installer file from Gatekeeper security so, if needed, it can be run again by double-clicking. This is the recommended method.

Q: Who is covered by Middlebury College's Microsoft Office license?

A: Currently employed Middlebury undergraduate faculty and staff, Midd undergraduate students, and currently employed faculty and staff at MIIS are eligible.

Our license does not cover installs for academic programs such as the summer Language Schools, Bread Loaf School of English, or Off-Campus Study. It also does not cover emeriti, alumni, retirees, contract hires, nor MIIS students.

Q: I'm confused. Do I really want Office 365 for business?

A: Yes! The links above take you to the proper installation pages. Our license is considered business/education.

Q: I received a server/DB error when I tried to log in. What does this mean?

A: This generic error means your email account is not authorized to use the Microsoft portal. Please contact the Technology HelpDesk if you feel this is an error.

Q: I'm having trouble with the installer. Where can I get help?
