New Blog Creation and Access
You must have a Middlebury netid to have a MovableType blog. To create a blog, go to the login page. Underneath the text boxes you will see a link to "Create a new blog."
A small browser window opens up, asking for information that is necessary to create your blog:
- Username - this is your MIDD netid (the first part of your email address)
- Password - DO NOT USE YOUR MIDD PASSWORD!! Use something else.
- Re-enter Password - see above
- Nickname - Comments from you will have this as part of your signature.
- Blog Name - Only use letters, numbers and underscores, NO SPECIAL CHARACTERS OR SPACES!! This can be edited later.
- E-Mail Address - this is your Middlebury College email address.
- Blog Description - Keep it short. This can also be edited later.
Click on the CREATE BLOG button, and you will get a message saying that your blog has been created, and that an email has been sent to you. Close the small browser window. Log in with the Username and Password you just created.
After you log in, you will see the name of your blog on the left-hand side. Click on the name of the blog, and you will be brought to the administrative side of your blog. From here, you can add entries, see comments that have been posted to your blog, and change how your blog looks to viewers.
An author adds material to their blog by creating entries. Entries may be of any length, and can include text, audio and video. Once an entry is created, it may be previewed, saved as unpublished, or save as published. Only published entries will be seen by visitors.
Entries can be edited after they are published, but this is not common.
Entries in MovableType may be assigned a category, or sub-category, for organizational purposes.
All entries in MovableType may be moved to different categories. Once this is done, you will need to rebuild your site.
Visitors to a blog may leave a comment through the use of a simple web form. In most cases, this is a name, an email address, and the text of their comment. Authors may decide whether comments appear immediately on the blog, or if they are held until the author can read them.
In some cases, a Comment Challenge, a simple line of text to be typed into a text area, is added. This is to keep spam bots from adding unwanted comments to a blog, thereby decreasing the amount of time needed to maintain the blog.
MovableType supports both publishing its own content via RSS (really simple syndication) as well as accessing RSS feeds with widgets.
All entries can be assigned one or more tags for use in a guided search.
Links to audio files in a MovableType entry will appear in the RSS feed. Visitors may subscribe to this feed as a podcast.
Access to Blogs
A visitor can view all published entries in a blog. Unpublished entries may have a scheduled publishing date, or they may be manually published.
A blog owner may allow, or not allow comments on their blog.
MovableType allows for customization. A quick design may be added using the StyleCatcher feature.

Authors who are familiar with CSS may edit stylesheet.css, available in the Templates.
Widgets are available to add character and functionality to the blog. Some widgets that are available are:

A feed widget can be added to create a list of links to any other blog or website that has an rss feed. Also, third party widgets can be added.
Faculty will see a list of all the classes they are teaching with the option to create a site for any class. If classes have more than one section, a single site can be made which groups all of these sections together into one site. Faculty can copy a course site from a previous semester into a "slot" for current semester.
Students will see a list of all the classes they are enrolled in with links to sites created in Segue. As well Segue will list all the course sites for which a given student has editor permissions.
Discussion & Assessment
Discussions/comments can be attached to any/all content blocks of Segue. The site owner can specify precisely who can participant in these discussions. In discussion mode, all participants can read and respond to each other's posts. In assessment mode, participants will not be able to read each other's posts, they will see only their own posts and replies to their post by the site owner. Site owners can rate any/all posts to a discussion/assessment. Discussion posts can be sorted by recent first, recent last, rating or author.
Site owners have an interface available to them that summarizes all the posts by all participants in a given discussion on a site or all the discussions of a given site. From this interface, site owners can email as a group any subset of discussion/assessment participants.
Roles & Permissions
Segue has a granular, hierarchical permissions structure (that matches a site's organization structure) that allows site owners to precisely define who can discuss, view, add, edit and/or delete any content block, page or section of their site(s).
Themes & Templates
The appearance of any Segue site can be customized by means of themes and theme settings. Each theme can have its own theme settings or variations. When a user creates a Segue site, they also chose from any number of templates. Templates are Segue sites with various organizational schema to help new users get started. Once a site is created with a certain template, the sections, pages and content blocks of the template can be modified and adapted to the user's preference.
