Nolij Java Troubleshooting

Please note that as of April 2015 all java functions (scanning, file explorer and document editing) are not supported in Chrome. Use IE or Firefox instead.

Java is disabled or not installed on the system Nolij7.png

  1. When Java is disabled or not installed people will get this error when logging in. If the user clicks ‘Proceed without Java’ they can get into Nolij just fine and most features will work. The most important feature missing is dragging and dropping new documents into Nolij.
  2. Check the java installation and make sure the currently authorized version is running (1,8x as of 2016).

a. Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin

b. Double click the javacpl.exe file to open Java Control Panel.

c. Click the Java tab

d. Click View button

e. If you don’t see 1.7.0_45 or a 1.8 version on this screen please contact the Help Desk for assistance in getting the right version of java on your machine.

Trouble Loading Java Nolij users will sometimes see an error message in the Nolij application that looks like this:

  1. Test. If that didn’t fix the problem try two more things:
    1. Click Manage Certificates (see the screenshot) and remove the Perceptive Software certificate.
    2. Click the Java tab and remove any old versions of java.
  2. Test. If that didn’t fix the problem check the java plug-in for the relevant browser. You may need to set it to always activate the correct version of Java. See this link for instructions: https://java.com/en/download/help/enable_browser.xml

Internet Explorer

  1. Click Tools and then Internet Options
  2. Select the Security tab, and select the Custom Level button
  3. Scroll down to Scripting of Java applets
  4. Make sure the Enable radio button is checked
  5. Click OK to save your preference

Firefox

  1. In the browser click the plugin icon on the address bar and the message panel below will open. Click Allow and Remember:

Nolij Login Troubleshooting

When accessing Nolij in Internet Explorer some user may see the Perceptive Nolij Web logo in the browser tab, but the login screen will not load.

Nolij1.png.png

This problem is typically caused by one of two things:

  1. “Middlebury.edu” being present in the “Compatibility View Settings” for Internet Explorer.
  2. Browser history not cleared since the upgrade to version 6.8 on 10/6/14.

To remove “Middlebury.edu” from the compatibility view settings do the following:

First, click the start menu in Internet Explorer and then select "Compatibility View Settings" Nolij2.png

From the “Compatibility View Setting” menu select “Middlebury.edu” and then click <REMOVE>. The browser page will automatically refresh.

Nolij3.png

Note that in Internet Explorer version 9 the screen will look like the one below. If the ‘Display all websites in Compatibility View’ box is checked you’ll need to uncheck it. When you’re done the screen should look like this:

To clear the browser history on Internet Explorer:

  1. Choose Tools -> Internet Options
  2. Under Browsing History click delete

You’ll get the following screen. Check the values as you see them below and click delete.

You should now be able to access the login screen.

Connecting to Nolij on Rosefinch

NOTE: Nolij is now set up as a streaming app on the RDS Farm. We will have a link to connection instructions here sometime soon. For now, contact the Help desk for instructions. Streaming is probably now a better option than Rosefinch.

Mac users need to first install the Microsoft Remote Desktop. Instructions are at go/Rosefinch.

Once you're connected to Rosefinch open up a browser. Internet Explorer is preferred.

Type go/nolij and sign in.

If you prefer to use Firefox you may need to complete the steps below on your first sign-in..

If you get this message when you start Nolij in Firefox, choose "Allow..."

Nolij11.png

Click the red plug next to the URL. If this is what you see then your plugin settings are fine.

Nolij12.png

But if what you see is the screenshot below, choose Allow and Remember.

Finally, change your security setting to medium.

  1. In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program File (x86)\Java\jre7\bin
  2. Double click the javacpl.exe file to open Java Control Panel.
  3. Choose the Security tab and change the setting to medium, as in the screenshot below.
  4. 'Enable Java content in the browser' should be checked.
