Register your computer on the Middlebury network
All computers and devices that are connected to the Middlebury College wired or secure network must be registered with our "Campus Manager". When you first bring your computer on campus and try to access the internet through our network, you will be directed to our Network Registration page.
Computers connected at Monterey, Bread Loaf, and Middlebury schools abroad do not need to be registered on our network.
Blackberries, PDAs, and Smart Phones don't need to be registered unless they access the internet through our Midd_secure secured wireless network.
How to register your computer on the network
If you have not registered your computer on our network, or if the last time you registered was more than 6 months ago, you will be directed to our Network Registration page. Registration is quick and easy.
Note that the registration process is exactly the same whether you are registering for the first time, or re-registering your computer.
- Make sure your computer is plugged in with an Ethernet cable to our wired network, anywhere on campus.
- Open up an Internet browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, etc). If you have not registered already, your computer should be directed to our Network Registration page. It looks like this:
- Click on Middlebury College Students, Faculty, and Staff (Including Language Schools). (If you do not have a Middlebury username / password, click Guest instead for one-day temporary access.)
- You will be asked if you are a responsible computer user. If you are, click I Agree.
- If you are using Windows, you will be asked to update your system. Please do so - but for now, just click Continue.
- Next, you will be reminded to use current and up-to-date virus protection software on your computer. See below for antivirus help. For now, click Continue.
- You will come to a page that looks like the one below. You will be asked to enter in your username and password.
- This is the same username and password that you would use to access your Middlebury email. Note that your "username" doesn't include the "@middlebury.edu" part of your email address.
- If you haven't set your username and password yet, or need to reset your password, you can do so by going to go/activate.
- Tell the register page whether you are using a laptop or a desktop, then click .
- Your computer will download a small file called Bradford Dissolvable Agent. Download and run this file. It will introduce your computer to the network, then pop up a page saying "Registration was successful".
- Restart your computer, or your network connection, and you will be all set!
System updates are very important to your computer's (and our network's) security, so please don't ignore them. However, you can continue with registration even if you haven't updated your computer yet.

Antivirus protection is very important both for your computer's security, and for our network's security. If you don't have antivirus software, you can install our Symantec AntiVirus by going to go/SAV.
"I didn't have any antivirus software" is one of the main reasons that students get virus infections on their computers. It's frustrating to lose your computer for a week because of a virus, when you have a major paper due. Please don't do that to yourself.
Troubleshooting and advanced
I'm not being sent to the registration page!
- If you want to register your computer but aren't being directed to the Network Registration page, you can manually access the page at go/netreg. Once you can see this page, follow the above registration steps as normal.
- If you are still having trouble registering your computer, it's useful to write down your IP address. This is a group of four 3-digit numbers that give us useful information about what's wrong in case your computer can't access the internet. For example, if the first and second section do not read 172.17, your computer will not be able to register without some help.

The above steps only work on a computer running Windows XP / Vista, Mac, or some flavors of Linux. If you have any other device such as an Xbox or iPod Touch, or you are having trouble registering your computer using the normal steps, feel free to call the Helpdesk and we can help you register the device.
We do not support personal routers
Many students bring their own routers to campus hoping to set up their own network. These devices need to be registered through the Helpdesk or they will not work.
However, we have run into lots of problems with routers over the last few years and we are no longer supporting them. For example, if routers are not configured correctly, they can cause other, nearby computers' network connections to break and leading to lots of confusion on our end until the router is found and turned off or fixed.
About Registration and the Campus Manager
A campus like Middlebury relies on a smoothly functioning and well-protected electronic network which provides not only access to the internet, but also to our secure file servers, email, and other on-campus resources. If any viruses or attacks on our network are detected, it's vitally important for us to know where they came from - what computer is responsible, and what person that computer belongs to. There's no way for us to know this without registering all computers that connect to the network.
To do this job, we set up the Campus Manager to register all computers on campus. Campus Manager has several related tasks
- Identify computers that have not been registered on the network and isolate them until they comply with our requirements for system safety.
- Remember every computer and who owns it so that if it is lost or stolen, Public Safety can potentially help the owner recover it.
- Freeze the access of any computer that is sending out SPAM, spreading viruses, or performing other chicanery, and notify the owner so that they can get help fixing the problem.
What registration means for your privacy
Campus Manager remembers the IP addresses, or internet addresses, that your computer has connected to on our network. We do not keep track of the websites you visit, the emails you write, what you download, etc.
If your computer is stolen or lost, we can use Campus Manager's records to try to find out where it is the next time it connects to the internet.
Every year we get a bundle of lawsuit letters from the RIAA informing us that they have seen students on our network downloading or distributing music illegally using peer-to-peer file sharing software, listing the IP addresses that identify those students, and requesting that we stop all such activity immediately. When we get such a letter, we email you to let you know that you have been caught (allegedly) doing so, and ask you to stop. We do not pass your name or any identifying information back to the RIAA.
