Spam Filtering at Middlebury

Middlebury uses Microsoft’s Exchange Online Protection technology to filter spam, phishing attacks, viruses, and other unwanted content from our email mailboxes. Exchange Online Protection provides several tools to help manage spam. Read on for additional information, including tips on how to use spam Quarantine, the Junk Email folder, Safe Senders, Safe Recipients, and Blocked Senders.

Using Quarantine to Manage Spam

Spam Quarantine Notifications

Messages sent to your Spam Quarantine are most likely bad news. Do NOT click on links in a message you find in Quarantine unless you are confident the message is legitimate. Be EXTRA cautious with messages asking you to update your account, reset your password, expand your email storage quota, etc. For more information about how to protect yourself from phishing attacks, please see go/phish.

Spam Quarantine Overview

Messages identified as spam or potential phishing attacks are delivered to the Spam Quarantine.

You can check your Spam Quarantine at any time by logging into go/quarantine (or directly via https://admin.protection.outlook.com/quarantine).

If you are missing a time-critical message, check your Junk EMail folder first, and then check the Spam Quarantine, via go/quarantine.

Messages identified as spam will be stored in the Spam Quarantine for 15 days.

If you have received spam messages, Microsoft will send you a daily “Spam Notification” email message. The messages are sent from quarantine@messaging.microsoft.com, once per day.

Releasing a message from Quarantine

You can release a message from Quarantine by logging into the Spam Quarantine web page, clicking on the message in question to select it, and then clicking on the envelope icon to release the message.

Alternatively, you can double-click on a message in the quarantine, to open it, and then click on the “Release…” link.

You can also click on the “Release to Inbox” link in the Spam Notification message to release specific messages.

Reporting a false-positive

Messages may occasionally be incorrectly identified as spam. To report false-positives, log into the Spam Quarantine, double-click on the message to open it, and click on “Release selected message(s) and report as false-positive…” link.

You can also use the “Report as Not Junk” link associated with a given message in the Spam Notification email.

The Microsoft Spam Analysis team uses false-positive reports to tune their spam content filtering service.

Note: Reporting a message as a false-positive will not necessarily prevent it from being blocked again. If you wish to guarantee delivery of a message, you need to add it to your Safe Senders list via Outlook or Outlook Web Access.

Deleting messages from Quarantine

Messages in Quarantine are automatically deleted after 15 days.
