Split VPN

Revision as of 15:08, 31 January 2011 by Nathan Burt (talk | contribs)

Why do we want to use VPN? When we are off-campus it lets us access College resources that would be unavailable off-campus without VPN. VPN can also be used to secure a network that is inherently insecure (e.g. wireless at a cafe/airport).

  • However, Mac OS X, by default, only sends traffic destined for the College over VPN. Any other traffic (e.g. Google, Amazon, etc.) is not sent via VPN, even if the VPN is running. This is known as "split VPN", and is turned ON by default on Mac OS X.
  • On Windows, doing VPN comes with a certain cost -- the network connection when VPN is running is slower. This is because split VPN is NOT turned on by default in Windows.

To turn split VPN on or off:

Mac OS X

Turn split VPN OFF:

  • Leopard & Snow Leopard (OS 10.5 & 10.6): System Preferences => Network => VPN => Advanced => place check-mark next to "Send all traffic over VPN".
  • Tiger (OS 10.4): Applications => Internet Connect => VPN => Advanced => place check-mark next to "Send all traffic over VPN".

To turn split VPN ON, reverse the instructions above (remove the check-mark)

Windows

To turn split VPN ON:

  • Vista:
    • Start => Control Panel => Network and Sharing => Manage Network Connections
    • right-click the VPN one => Properties => Networking => Properties => Advanced
    • Remove check-mark next to "Use default gateway on remote network"
  • XP:
    • Start => Control Panel => Network Connections
    • right-click the VPN one => Properties => Networking => Properties => Advanced
    • Remove check-mark next to "Use default gateway on remote network"

To turn split VPN OFF reverse the above instructions (place the check-mark)
