Standard Computer Models for Faculty and Staff

For both the Apple Macintosh and Dell (Windows) platforms, ITS offers three standard models that address the most common usage needs.

Current Models

Desktop Pros:
  • Best for power users. Most-powerful CPUs available
  • Separate monitor means lots of display options and flexibility
  • Most-easily repaired and expanded

  • Lack of portability
Standard Laptop Pros:
  • Portability without sacrificing excessive performance and screen size
  • Good battery life

  • Heavier laptop might not be suitable for all travelers
  • Much-smaller screen than desktop
  • Performance significantly less than desktop, may be noticeable by power users
Lightweight Laptop Pros:
  • Maximum portability and ease of carrying

  • Least-powerful option
  • Smaller size mandates smaller battery, so less runtime while on battery than standard laptop model
  • Smaller size mandates smaller screen than standard laptop model, might not be suitable for all users

ITS recognizes that different users have different needs and preferences in computer platforms and therefore offers both OS X (Apple Macintosh) and Microsoft Windows (Dell) computer options to faculty and staff. Note that certain College software systems require running Windows. Built-in optical drives are only available in the standard Dell desktop, all others require an optional external optical drive. Also, “docking stations” are not available for MacBooks. Please keep these things in-mind when making your hardware choices.

For best support with the college network, applications and printing, ITS recommends users choose the Dell option. For best performance, a desktop should be selected unless portability is specifically required. MacIntosh computers have a higher price tag and should only be considered if specific software is required. If Windows software is required, then a Windows computer will be provided.
