Student Printing and Quotas

Papercut Print Server 

Access PaperCut to print

Student Access

Student users are granted access to a set of basic web pages providing them with access to:
• View their account balance
• List recent account activity
• Use tools such as TopUp/Pre-Paid Cards and funds transfers to other users

To access PaperCut print server and log-in you will need to open-up a Web browser and type in:

https://papercut.middlebury.edu/user  or type into your browser's address bar: Go/Papercut

Guest Access

If you are a Guest here at Middlebury and would like to print you will need to register with PaperCut. To register as a

Guest on PaperCut you will click the link "Guest please click this link to create an account."  You will then be directed

to fill-out the registration form.

Once you submit you will see a confirmation the your new account was created successfully.  Make sure you copy you

new account information.  At the bottom of the confirmation form you will see a link to Login.  Log into PaperCut.

Once you sign into PaprCut you are presented with the form below:

The default view is of Summary.  Additional options you have are:

Redeem Card

From here users can use a Redeem Card (pre-pay). When a valid card number is entered, the value of the card

is transferred to the user's balance. 


To redeem a Pre-Paid Card:

1.  Purchase a card with the value you seek.  Cards will come in $5, $10, or $20 increments. 

The locations to purchase a Print Card are:

  • The College Bookstore located at Proctor Hall
  • Wilson Cafe located at The Main Library
  • MiddExpress located on the first floor of the McCullough Student Center


2.  Open a web browser and navigate to the PaperCut user login page. After logging in, your account status

should display the added amount.


3. Click on the Redeem Card link on the left-hand navigation bar.


4. Enter the Card Number in the Card Number box and press Redeem Card. Take care to enter the number exactly

as listed including any dashes (-).


5. If the card's number is valid, the credit as listed on the card will be transferred to your
account and this will list in your transaction history.


Please note:  Unused funds that remain in account will be rolled-over to the next semester until the student leaves the college.  If the student leaves the college with funds in his/her account there will be no refunds made available.




Transaction History

The transaction history page displays a user's balance history in detail. Here a user can see how, when any why their balance was affected. If there

is ever doubt about why a user's balance is at the current amount, or what they have been spending their credit on, the transaction history page has

the answer.


Recent Print Jobs

This page displays your printing history. It allows a you to see the cost of your print jobs, or to find a particular print job.

The filter criteria allows for many different views of printing, and can be used to easily drill-down to find the information required.


Jobs Pending Release

This page allows users to view and interact with jobs held in a hold/release queue. From here, jobs that have been held in a

managed queue can be released (printed) by the user.  This allows for them to confirm the cost and details of the job before

printing, and/or confirm their identity before the job is released.


Web Print

Web Print is a printing solution ideal for laptops and other non-domain connected systems.  This page allows you to

upload documents for printing, rather than requiring the print queues to be installed on their system.  You will be

guided through a wizard where they can select a printer, choose options such as number of copies, and select a document

to upload. The document will then be queued for printing and you can track its status from this page.  Web Print is a driver-less

printing service that allows users to print by uploading documents from a web browser.  No client software or driver installation is

required. Web Print provides a simple way to enable printing for laptop, wireless and anonymous users without the overhead

of installing printer drivers and managing server authentication. 

Some of the key features of PaperCut's Web Print solution include:

  • Simple wizard style interface, accessed from any web browser.
  • Users authenticate with their regular (network / domain) logins.
  • 100% web based. No drivers or client software required.
  • File uploads with progress indicator (in the style of GMail attachment uploads).


Supported Applications and File Formats


The following table lists the applications that Web Print may use to render uploaded documents into print jobs. Before a file format can be accepted as an upload its supporting application must be installed.

Add Credit

The Add Credit page is used to transfer funds into a user's account from an external source. You will select an amount you would like

to increase your print quota by and press the "Add Value" button.  This will take you to a form which will present options and pay methods

to increase your account balance.  Once you successfully submit your credit it will automatically by posted to your print quota account.

Printing Quotas

Printing Policy (summary)

  • Pages are deducted from the student's quota each time a print job is printed. 
  • Release stations hold jobs for up to 2 hours.  After 2 hours there is a clean-up process that will remove the job from the print queue if it has not printer.
  • Web Print is made available to all students.  This allows students to print to any public printer from their laptop.  See Login Page
  • All student accounts should be activated for PaperCut by February 8, 2010
  • Special groups such as  TAs and exchange students have been created.
  • We are now charging 5 cents per black & white page (single sided) and 10 cents per page for black & white copies.  See rates
  • Faculty and Staff are chanrged 50 cents per page  for color copying in the Main Library.
  • Students may add additional amounts to their quota balance.  See Redeem Card
  • Printers:  Students should use public printers only! 
  • Refunds - Students will be required to submit requests for refunds through the PaperCut model when printing errors and problems arise. Requests for a refund will be processed once a week by the Helpdesk during regular business hours.  Urgent requests will be considered depending on the situation.  Note: refunds will not be given for user error (duplicate printing, selecting wrong printer, etc...)
  • Student Organizations:  Student organizations will need to have a budget to print to LIS.  Pages larger than a page or two will need to be sent to Reprographics.  Printing to LIS will be charged to the organizations Banner Index if using a plotter.  All standard color printing will need to go through Reprographics.  If the color printer LIB145C is used the organization's Banner index will be charged as well.
  • Plotter printing:  For course printing, once a term, applicable departments will submit to Jeff Lahaie a list of:

    1.  Student IDs and Names

    2.  The amount to be added to the student quota to cover printing

Quotas and Rates:

Each semester students are given an account balance within PaperCut as follows:


SPRING & FALL SEMESTER:

Non-seniors receive $25 per term Which equates to 500 black & white sides (625 double-sided)
Seniors receive $50 per term Which equates to 1,000 black & white sides (1,250 double sided)






J-TERM SEMESTER:

Non-seniors receive $10 Which equates to 200 black & white sides (250 double sided)
Seniors receive $20 Which equates to 400 black & white sides (500 double sided)






SUMMER SEMESTER:

Rates have been determined as follows:

5 cents per black & white impression once quota is exceeded.

4 cents per black & white impression once quota is exceeded using duplex (8 cents front & back of sheet is charged)

Color printing:  25 cents (letter), 50 cents (Ledger)

Color plotter:   $1.50 per linear foot



Semester (Term) Dates:

Each beginning of of term the student will receive funds (as outlined above).  The Term Dates are:

Fall:                         August 21 (start)  to  December 31 (end)

Winter:                     January 1 (start)  to  January 31 (end)

Spring:                     February 1 (start)  to  June 4 (end)

Language Schools:   June 5 (start)  to  August 20 (end)
