GOALS

  • HAVE FUN
    * Raise awareness of web based tools in a fun, fast-paced, non-threatening environment
    * Increase web 2.0 literacy across LIS
    * Encourage innovation and fun in the workplace
    * Invite all staff to present fun new tools they are using
    * Tap into local expertise with web tools and toys
    * Foster a collaborative working environment
    * Foster a cross-departmental format
    * Encourage use of tech tools to enhance efficiency and effectiveness
    * Encourage all staff to present and/or attend
    * Encourage playing with web tools
    * Save money - many tools are in beta and are "free"
    * Low-cost/budget staff development
    * Celebrate community and collaboration
    * Enjoy a meal together; learn together outside usual workgroups; learn from each other
    * Play with technologies and tools
    * Open door to new tools; experimenting with new tools; reducing fears of playing and using new tools (that come and go...); facilitate the use of free web tools - no need to reinvent the wheel locally
    * Exposure to the ideas - not necessarily the actual how-to of the tool
    * Increase comfort level of exploring new web tool
    * Did we mention...HAVE FUN!

FORMAT

  • Pilot project Fall 08
    * 1 hour each during mid-day and early evening to accommodate staff schedules/preferences
    * 2 in Oct; 2 in Nov; 1 in Dec
    * Lunchtime program repeated at evening program if possible - but fluid with topics and presenters
    * Raffle to encourage participation; all participants eligible for the drawing at each session; all participants throughout the semester eligible for the grand prize at the end of the semester
    * Everyone brings their own bag meal
    * Brief overview of tool - each presentation 10 - 15 minutes long max for a total 30 - 40 min
    * Just enough structure to provide a springboard for discussion and sharing
    * Allow time for unscheduled topics/presenters and informal sharing
    * Time to share recent discoveries and new fun web tools for the last 20 minutes of the program
    * Staff across LIS as presenters
    * Encourage managers and supervisors to give release time; acknowledge participation in annual performance review

TOPICS - wicked good web tools and ideas - constantly evolving...

  • Delicious
    * GoodReads
    * LibraryThing
    * Cha Cha
    * Jott
    * Remember the Milk (RTM)
    * RSS/feedreaders
    * Bloglines/Google Reader
    * FeedDemon
    * Flickr
    * Twitter/Yammer
    * Facebook
    * Grand Central (Google Voice)
    * iGoogle
    * CommonCraft

MARKETING

  • Staff blog
    * All staff email from Dean
    * Support from Area Directors and Dean of Library and Information Services (our first presenter!)

PARTICIPATION

  • Total numbers for all sessions - 50

BUDGET - PRIZES

  • Silly (inexpensive) prizes - bubbles; party games, etc.
    * Coffee/tea mug with coffee card (5 @ $15)
    * Grand Prize - iPod (donated)

POST-OP observations

  • Lunch and Learn - hope to expand the idea to offer a regular brown-bag lunch sharing/learning opportunity (currently planning a brown-bag lunch topic on cool new apps for the iPhone/iPod)
    * Marketing - not all staff were reading the blog
    * Evening sessions were not as well attended
    * Impromptu discussions brought out other user experiences (other tips, tricks, and tools people were using)
    * Met goals - had fun! :-)

Program was a part of a larger initiative - other things happening at Midd:

  • LISterine (Bryan Carson and Carrie MacFarlane)
    * Zoho stats (Joy Pile)
    * Mosio texting (Brenda Ellis)
    * Voting using Uservoice
    * Google docs, blog initiatives, documentation shifted to wiki
    * Upcoming inservice theme - tech tools and music
