Uniform Titles

Purpose

• The purpose of uniform titles is to bring together all catalog entries for a given work. Sometimes we assign uniform titles in advance of receiving other manifestations of the work.
• DLC records (full-level records from the Library of Congress) usually include a uniform title if one is potentially appropriate; the cataloger chooses to use it or not. Other records may lack a UT, so the cataloger may need to assign one.

General Statements

Uniform title fields are 130 and 240. 730's and 7xx $t's also consist of the "official" or uniform title chosen for the work represented.

• 130: Uniform title for the work in hand if it lacks an author main entry.
• 240: Uniform title for the work in hand if it has an author main entry.
  • A 240 should always have indicators 10 . If you wish not to trace a ut, change the field to 246 31 .
  • If the 240 has $l for language and you change it to a 246, keep the $l in the 246 (even though MARC format does not include a $l)
• 7xx $t and 730: Titles of related or included works. Form of UT should match the form we have previously used for that work or form which fits with our UT policy.

Before tracing or not tracing a UT, always check to see if we have other editions of the work (in any language) or works about the work. If we do, we must use a UT of some variety, whether in English or in the original language, to co-locate them.

130 Uniform titles (Main entry)

• Normally traced
  • If authority record includes 430 from title-page title, delete it.
  • Examples:
    130 0 Koran.
    130 0 Bible. $l English. $s Anchor Bible. $f 1964.

730 Uniform Titles (Added entries)

• Make sure the form in the 730 matches form we have in our catalog.
• Example:
  730 02 Talmud. $l English. $k Selections.

240 (or 7xx $t) Uniform Titles: Typical Cases

1. Work is a translation of a single title

Example:
100 10 Rodriguez, Jose.
240 10 Historia d'Espana. $l English
245 10 History of Spain.

If original title (240) is in:

• French, German, Italian, Latin, or Spanish: Trace. Check before not tracing.
• Portuguese, Russian:
  • Literary works: Always trace.
  • Religious scripture: Normally trace.
  • Other works: Normally do not trace, but check.

• Sanskrit, Tibetan, Arabic:
  • Religious scripture: Normally trace.
  • Other: Normally do not trace, but check.

• Hebrew, Japanese, or Chinese:
  • Religious scripture (Hebrew, Chinese): Normally trace.
  • Other: Normally do not trace. Check.

• Other languages:
  • Literary or religious works: Check.
  • Other: Do not trace unless needed to bring together various editions, and then normallly use English language title format. Check.

2. Work has a collective or generic title (translations or not)

Example:
100 10 Joyce, James.
240 10 Selections
245 14 The portable James Joyce.

Case 1: 240 is "Selections," "Short stories. Selections," etc. Trace only if we have 15 or more works by that author. If the collective uniform title is not traced, delete the 240 field. Do not change it to a 246 31 . Do not include $f with the year except for the Bible.

3. Translations of multiple works in one item

If the whole book is a translation, the original title is traced as the uniform title. If the works were not published together in the original language or if you lack an original title, there are 3 choices:

1. No UT plus 700 $t with generic title
2. Generic UT
3. UT of original title of 1st part (e.g. The forest) plus 700 $t with generic title
   

4. Books issued under different titles in the same language

Example 1: Henry IV; Henry the 4th; History of Henry the fourth.
Example 2: "Originally published as:..."

• Recheck to see if we have work under variant title and make sure that all editions have the same UT.
• For title changes (like example 2), we may decide we will never get the older edition and change 240 to 740. Check first.

5.Books containing more than one work and lacking a collective title

Case 1: Two titles by the same author Example: 100 10 Smith, John 245 14 The unicorn ; $b and, A day at the beach Not a translation: No 240. Add 700 x2 $t for second title: 700 12 Smith, John. $t Day at the beach. Is a translation from a language for which we trace UT.: Add 240 10 [Original title of first work]. $l English Add 700 x2 [Author]. $t [Original title of second work]. $l English

Case 2: More than two titles by the same author Example: 100 10 Smith, John. 245 14 The unicorn ;$b Two days ; and, Wanderlust Not a translation and we own fewer than 16 works by that author: No 240. Add 740's for 2nd and subsequent titles if there aren't too many. If there are too many, add 700 $t Selections (or whatever appropriate collective title is). No authority record. Not a translation and we own 16 or more works by that author: Trace 240 10 Selections (or whatever appropriate collective title is.) Make authority record (or add to existing one). Example authority record: 100 10 Smith, John. $t Selections 400 10 Smith, John. $t The unicorn ; ...[etc.]) Is a translation: Trace collective UT: e.g. 240 10 Selections. $l English Make authority record as above.

Case 3: Two or more titles by two or more authors Example: 100 10 Hill, Joan. 245 10 Blue dawn /$c Joan Hill. Awake / Mary Dare. 700 12 Dare, Mary. $t Awake. No 240 UT unless Blue dawn is a translation or fits some other UT category. Make 700 $t(s) for additional work(s).
