Using Remote Desktop Services on a Mac
There are two methods for connecting to the RDS Cluster from a Mac
- Using Microsoft Remote Desktop,which is explained first . This option creates a list of the programs in the Microsoft Remote Desktop client. This is the preferred method for individual office computers.
- Access via Web Browser. This option is useful for shared computers or connecting via home computer once you have connected to the VPN. The only caveat is that you need to have the latest version of Microsoft Remote Desktop installed as it uses that program to open the configuration files. This option is explained second.
RDS Cluster connection using Microsoft Remote Desktop
- First, you need to make sure you are using the correct version of Microsoft Remote Desktop. If the icon is NOT red like the pictures below, please visit Microsoft_Remote_Desktop_(Mac) to install the proper version. Use the information from the “Finding and Installing” section only, then come back here once installed.
- There are two versions currently supported. Uses the instructions for the version that matches the icon you have. Once you have a supported version installed, launch the program.
Version 8 Instructions
- Click on the Remote Resources button as per the screenshot below.
- Enter the text
https://middrds.middlebury.edu/RDWeb/Feed/webfeed.aspxas shown in the screenshot below and fill out your username and password (make sure you use the midd\ before your username), then click on “refresh”.
- Click on the red x to close the “Remote Resources” window. Underneath Remote Resources in Microsoft Remote Desktop, you will see icons for all the Applications you have access to. Unlike with the web browser connection, there are no folders to organize the icons. They are all in one list. Double-clicking an icon will launch the Application.
- The first time you sign in to Remote Desktop you may see the screen below. Uncheck the Drive checkbox, and check the "Do not ask again" box.
- Click Connect.
TIP: Drag the Microsoft Remote Desktop icon to your Dock for easy access.
Version 10 Instructions
- Once the program is launched, click on the + on the menu bar as show in the picture below and select add remote resource.
- You should get a popup like the shot below.
- First, you need to make sure you are using the correct version of Microsoft Remote Desktop. If the icon is 'NOT red like the picture below, please visit Microsoft_Remote_Desktop_(Mac) to install the proper version. Use the information from the “Finding and Installing” section, then come back here once installed.
- Use http://go/rds/ or point your favorite web browser to https://middrds.middlebury.edu/RDWeb.
- You should see a screen like the one above. Type in your credentials and click on the “Sign in” button. Note: You need to use midd\ before your username.
- You will see a new screen like the one below. It will show folders and icons for applications you have access to use.
- If you click on an icon, you get different results depending on the browser you use. You may need to save the .rdp file, navigate to your default save location, then double-click on it to launch Microsoft Remote Desktop (the program used to open RDP files). - If you click on a folder (the Office 2010 folder in this example), you will be presented with a new screen of icons.
