Davis Family Library
Library and Information Services strives to provide the best possible service to persons with disabilities. Users are encouraged to park in the designated spots on Old Chapel Road and enter the library through the front door. Special access to the Storrs Ave. doors for students is arranged through the ADA coordinator and for Faculty/Staff through Human Resources. Members of the general public may apply for such access at the Circulation Desk. Only members of the public with government issued Handicapped Persons plates or placard will be granted access
Please note that the Main Level and the Lower Level have at-grade exits but the Upper Level and Mezzanines are accessed only by the elevators, which may not be used in case of fire. If you are a wheelchair user and you can’t exit the building during a fire alarm, wait inside one of the stairwells for rescue personnel. If possible, note the staircase number (1-4) and ask someone exiting the building to notify emergency responders of your location, or call 911 from a cell phone to alert rescuers of your location. The stairwells are designed as “safe zones” during a fire with doors that shut automatically and an independent air circulation system.
Elevator #2 in the NE corner of the building is designed to operate on the emergency generator during a power failure.
Some users may not be able to reach all of the library shelves and some people may have trouble reading the call numbers on the spines of the books. Users may request assistance with book retrieval by contacting Circulation Services in person, by phone x5494, or email.
Special equipment is available in LIB241, right around the corner from the print /copy center on the Main Level. There you’ll find a CCTV magnifying viewer and a computer workstation with a zoom text viewer and reader, as well as Dragon voice recognition software for English and Spanish. Ask for the “ADA computer” password at the Circulation Desk or Research Desk.

Center for Teaching, Learning, and Research (CTLR)
located in LIB225. Please see their website CTLR.
CTLR supports teaching and learning at Middlebury in a wide variety of ways. For students, it is
a hub of educational inquiry and academic growth in writing, oral presentation, quantitative reasoning, time management, as well as course content tutoring. Students can also get information and advice about undergraduate research opportunities and about a number of nationally competitive fellowships and scholarships. For faculty, it offers resources and programs to advance teaching. Beginning in the 2014/15 academic year, it will also include the new Academic Technology team and the new Digital Liberal Arts initiative. x3131 - firstname.lastname@example.org
Middlebury College groups and offices are encouraged to present displays of library materials to coincide with current events on campus or in the world at large. Students may also present displays related to their academic work. (Space may also be made available for displays that do not specifically feature library materials.)
Those requesting the space determine the content of displays. The group or office designs, installs, and removes the display. Please remember that all policies in the College Handbook related to General Conduct Standards and Community Standards must be adhered to. The presenters are responsible for checking the content regularly to ensure that General Conduct Standards and Community Standards are being upheld and the display doesn't include, for instance, slanderous statements, incitement to violence, or hate speech. This is an important responsibility to take note of especially in cases where a display includes an interactive element where content can be added by visitors.
No material that could pose a safety hazard is allowed to be part of the display; barbed wire, glass, etc.
Each display should indicate who presented it and include contact information that can be used if people viewing it have questions or comments.
Student groups that want to sell or distribute anything must first apply to the Center for Campus Activities & Leadership (CCAL) for a vending permit. No home made food products may be distributed without consent from the manager of Dining Services.
Space for "tabling" (staffing a table to sell or distribute something) is available in the Vestibule near the Wilson Cafe (between the Atrium and the outside). The Vestibule is scheduled through the Events Scheduling Office. See go/schedule
- Atrium (or lobby) on the Main Level: Can be set up in many ways with various combinations of the display props mentioned below. This space is often reserved so make your plans and place your reservation request early.
- Harman Periodicals Reading Area, Lower Level: This half circle reading lounge at the bottom of the grand staircase can be set up in a variety of ways using the display props mentioned below.

EQUIPMENT AND PROPS:
Equipment and props must be kept in reusable condition. Do not damage surfaces. Everything you do should be completely reversible and you should leave the display area in the same condition it was in before you installed your display. Here is what's available:
Large rolling bulletin board: One of these is owned by Davis Library and is routinely available for displays. The tacking surface is 68" wide and 44" high. These are two-sided boards and if used the display should be designed with two sides even if the content is the same on both sides. If you need more than one, Facilities Services has a fleet of these boards that can be placed in the Davis Family Library by request.Please note: There is an approximately $12.00 delivery fee for each of these boards and therefore the person or group requiring the board must provide an account number in order to schedule delivery.'
Panels: Three-panel, double-sided display walls. Two identical units are available. Each side is 72" high and 65" wide, with the individual folds being 21", 22", and 21". The panels are tack-able board covered with fabric.
Book display unit: An a-frame with four book shelves on it and a 12" x 37" tack board above. Can be set up and used in a variety of ways and placed where needed.
Table: a 24" x 38" desk/table that can be used as a display surface or to hold one or two computer monitors.
Poster frames: Versatile sign stands or easels--
a) Black metal stand 8.5"x11", horizon orientation. b) Silver metal stand 11"x17", portrait or horizon orientation. c) Stand that accepts one or two 3' x 2' bulletin boards, horizon or portrait orientation. d) Easels to hold stiff posters (you provide the foam core or card board backing) up to 32" x 42, horizon or portrait orientation,
and e) freestanding frame that accepts banner-like posters sized as large as 39.5"x 90" (39.5" is optimal width). It can be either one or two-sided, but best when content is placed on both sides so people can see it coming from either direction.
Computer monitor: An IMac may be placed on a standing cart to display web pages or show media. Reservations for this must be made in advance and complete details of the required setup must be furnished at least 48 hours before the display is to be set up. (email email@example.com)
You are responsible for checking the computer and keeping your display going. Consultants at the Helpdesk Walk-in have administrative access and can help with changing settings on the iMac as needed. It's a good idea to put a sign on the iMac itself telling people what they should do to use the display... "Click to watch one of the videos!". If you're displaying a web page you should make that page the "home" page on all the browsers so that it appears when a browser is opened. (A good format for the sign that fits well on the iMac is standard letter sized paper in the horizontal orientation, printing your text on 1/2 of it.
Usually the main challenge with using a computer for your display is making sure that your presentation, video or pictures keep looping. For that purpose, the following formats have proven successful for presenting your topic:
- For videos: DVD or QuickTime movie. Open VLC from the Dock:
To open a DVD click File => Open Disk and tick the box "No menus".
To open a QuickTime movie, click File => Open
To make the video loop, click Playback => Repeat All.
- For images: Save them as in a standard format such as JPEG or PNG. The default Preview program from Apple will loop your pictures in a slideshow automatically per these instrucitons.
- For presentations: PowerPoint is strongly recommended. It can be setup to loop per these instructions.
What follows is a brief checklist of things to keep in mind when preparing a display for the Davis Family Library.
- Review the rules and descriptions above regarding content, spaces and equipment.
- Propose your idea and reserve the space, fill out the form here: Davis Family Library Atrium Display Request form.
- Plan: create a detailed plan for your display. Decide how you’d like it to look. Danielle Rougeau installs many exhibits for Davis Library and can offer advice on design. What materials will you need? You may want to consult a Librarian to see what library materials would be appropriate for your display. Gather things like poster board and images for signage. If your display will include media or computing equipment like a computer, be sure to reserve those items in advance through the Helpdesk. (Be sure that you have the legal right to copy anything like images, text, video clips, etc. that you copy to create your display.) If your display is related to an upcoming event, consider including information referring to the display in the promotional materials for the event. It's a good idea to put a large title on your display so people can tell at a glance what its about. Each display should indicate who presented it and include contact information that can be used if people viewing it have questions or comments Consider using the plotter in the Wilson Media Lab to produce large backdrops.
- Finalize plans and for your display the week before you are scheduled to install it. Reservations are usually for one week, running from noon on Monday to noon on Monday. Have everything ready to go on Monday morning so all you have to do when the space becomes available at noon is put it in place.
- Select library materials: If you are using library materials in your display, the day before you install your display, gather the materials from the shelves and give them to the Circulation Desk to change the status of the materials from “available” to “on display” so that library users will be able to locate the items.
- Install: take all your materials and mount your display. Remember not to damage surfaces. Please bring all the tools and supplies (tape, scissors, etc.) you’ll need to complete your work with you. Schedule a time with Media Services through the Technology Helpdesk to install any media equipment. If you're using any of the mobile display units coordinate the timing of their placement with the Circulation Desk staff who scheduled your display. If a computer is part of your display, remember to put a sign on or near it that explains to people what they should do to see whatever it is you're showing.
- Publicize: work with Library staff to set up promotional signage to direct people to your display. Submit a listing to Events at Middlebury.
- Removal: when your display is scheduled to end (usually at noon on Monday), take it down right away and return and library materials to the Circulation Desk to have the status changed from “on display” back to “available”. We will assume that displays that are not removed are abandoned and we will dispose of the contents.

Find a PC, Mac or printer
See go/hours to see hours for all LIS service points.
Print/copy rooms are: LIB303 (upper level), LIB242 & LIB242K (main level), LIB142 (lower level) To find an available printer, visit go/findaprinter (all computer labs on campus), Public printers are set up to print to the print/copy room on the same level.
There are 2 black and white photocopiers located in the Davis Library on the Main Level and the Lower Level, consult the library maps to find the "Print/Copy" areas. There is one color photocopier in Library 142. There is a color photocopier available in Armstrong Library in Bicentennial Hall.
Students have access to an outgoing fax service in The Davis Family Library, room 242, and may receive faxes through the McCullough Student Center’s mail center. That fax machine’s number is 802-443-2068. There is no charge to students who are faxing.
Faculty and staff will be transitioning to electronic faxing (eFax) in the remaining months of 2017.
There is a typewriter for use in LIB 142.

Rooms and room reservations

Except where other policies take precedence, library rooms may be reserved by current faculty, staff and students. When they are not reserved, most rooms are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Visitors and guest borrowers should be aware that members of the College community have priority in the use of most library spaces and services.
Seminar Room (LIB230)
Capacity = 18. The Seminar Room offers the latest in video conferencing technology, opening the door to distance teaching and learning. Send and receive high-quality video, audio and computer generated data streams around the world. To check availability and reserve this room see: go/scheduling
Watson Lecture Hall (LIB201)
Capacity = 28. Equipped with two side-by-side projection screens able to display video projection, computer generated data, images from a document camera, or dual 35mm slide projections, this Lecture Hall is like no other on campus. To check availability and reserve this room see: go/scheduling
Capacity = 36. LCD projection to display video or computer generated data. To check availability and reserve this room see: go/scheduling
Video Viewing Rooms (LIB240 A&B)
Capacity = 10. 3 person minimum. To view the reservations calendar and reserve a time, and for a full description of policies, visit LibCal Library Video Viewing Rooms at http://go.middlebury.edu/viewingroom.
-LIB 240A has a large TV screen with surround sound for film screenings. It is equipped with region-free DVD, Blu-Ray, and VHS (U.S. and International formats) players.
-LIB 240B has a large TV screen with surround sound for film screenings. It is equipped with a Blu-Ray player. In an effort to provide student, faculty and staff access to new technologies, LIB 240B also has an Oculus Rift Virtual Reality headset with a number of titles. Touch controllers for the Oculus system may be borrowed from the Circulation Desk.
Group Study Rooms
For use by 2 or more people or for practicing oral presentations.
- LIB150 A-D
Capacity = 4. The four group study rooms on the Lower Level are equipped with a 22" LCD display and a multi-port VGA switch, allowing you to connect multiple laptops and easily collaborate by switching between them. Capacity = 4. Six group study rooms are located on the Upper Level of the Library. These are first come, first served.
Videoconferencing rooms LIB105a, LIB105b
Video conferencing needs take first priority in the use of Library 105a and Library 105b. To check availability and reserve these rooms see: go/scheduling
Meeting Room (LIB145)
Capacity = 16. This meeting room is equipped with video conferencing technology, a LCD projector with a laptop connection, and Blu-ray/DVD player (region-free for DVDs, Region A only for Blu-rays). Reserved for Library or ITS staff use (or other academic/administrative office meetings) from 8am-5:30pm weekdays. In order to allow for the scheduling of meetings and ad-hoc workshops, this room cannot be reserved for semester-length classes. Conference Room (LIB221)
Capacity = 8. This conference room is great for small meetings or a large group study. Equipped with a 22" LCD display. LIB101 (Davis Family Library, Lower Level)
Special Collections staff are responsible for the Abernethy Collection of American Literature, the College Archives, Rare Books and Manuscripts, the Helen Hartness Flanders Ballad Collection, and the Vermont Collection. These collections offer a variety of rare, unique and primary-source materials to support the College curriculum. Special Collections offers a climate-controlled environment in which rare, fragile, and/or valuable materials are housed in closed stacks (with the exception of circulating portions of the Vermont Collection located adjacent to Special Collections on the Davis Family Library Lower Level). Materials are retrieved by staff for researchers' use in the Reading Room. Wilson Media Development Lab
LIB 220 (Davis Family Library Main Level) Capacity = 15
The Wilson Media Lab is dedicated primarily to the support and development of media projects. Digital Media Tutors and other Academic Technology staff in the lab can help researchers with any form of media, whether for a group project or a class presentation. Regular training sessions are open to all. Faculty members may get help with a class web page or with incorporating multimedia into course design or research.
The room is also used for research workshops. Non-library staff and faculty may reserve the room, no earlier than 7 days in advance, by contacting Doreen Bernier (firstname.lastname@example.org or x5595).
The room should be used for training sessions where every individual needs a computer; meetings should not be scheduled in this room.
If the room is not being used for a training session, it is open as a computer lab.
Guidelines for Library staff who wish to schedule the room:
For workshops that require specialized software in the Wilson Media Lab:
- If the lab is not available then look for another space with the same software. Depending on the required software, the virtual desktop might be a solution.
- If no alternatives are available, determine whether the workshop can be scheduled at another date/time. (Course-related workshops have less flexibility than open workshops.)
- If the workshop cannot be scheduled at another date/time, contact the person who has booked the lab and ask if you can look for another space for them. If there are no alternatives, your request cannot be accommodated. Try for another date/time.
For research workshops:
- Consider: Can it be held in another space in the library? Especially when the workshop is more than one month away, try to use another room. Can it be held in the Armstrong Library (MBH161)? Most of these workshops are course-related; can your workshop be held in the regular course meeting space?
- If you cannot use another room, schedule the workshop in the lab.

- LIB140, MBH116/117 and SDL 122 are scheduled by the Scheduling Office. CTLR spaces are scheduled by JoAnn Brewer. MBH161 is scheduled by Armstrong staff and librarians. Most of the other library rooms in the list are in Outlook and I believe that Library and ITS staff should be able to book them directly.

Users are encouraged to park in the designated spots next to McCardell Bicentennial Hall on Bicentennial Way. Upon entering the building, take the elevator to the second level. The front door of Armstrong library is diagonally across the Great Hall from the elevators.
Both of the emergency exits on the first level are at-grade. On the second (entry) level, the at-grade exit is through the front door and to the right.
All the elevators in McCardell Bicentennial Hall are designed to operate on the emergency generator during a power failure.

Special equipment is available in MBH204, the alcove next to the printing room on the second level. There you’ll find an Outlook color magnifying viewer and a computer workstation with Kurzweil 3000, Zoomtext, and an attached scanner.

PCs are located on the second (entry) level and the first level. To find an available computer, visit go/findapc (all computer labs on campus), McCardell Bicentennial Hall - Armstrong Library (second level), or McCardell Bicentennial Hall - Armstrong 161 (first level).
Armstrong 161 is a computer lab located on the first level. It has 12 workstations and 1 podium computer. For information on reserving this lab, see "Rooms & Room Reservations" below.
A color copier (50 cents per page) and two black-and-white copiers (10 cents per page) are located on the first level below the stairs. Copy cards can be purchased from the vending machine near the copiers.
Exhibits & Displays
A display case at the entrance to the library may be used by groups or individuals for curricular or co-curricular exhibits. Other spaces in the library maybe used as well. Contact Carrie Macfarlane (email@example.com, 802.443.5018) for more information.
There are six lockers on the first level of Armstrong. Please stop by the Circulation Desk with your Midd ID to borrow a key.

There are 3 printers at Armstrong: BIH203K (second level), and BIH202 and BIH161 (first level). To find an available printer, visit visit go/findaprinter (all computer labs on campus), McCardell Bicentennial Hall - Armstrong Library (second level), or McCardell Bicentennial Hall - Armstrong 161 (first level). A large-format printer (a.k.a. "plotter") is located in room 209. Printing to the plotter costs $1.50 per linear foot. Follow the instructions here.
Rooms & Room Reservations

Capacity = 4. Has large whiteboard. Reservations for 2 or more people may made online using go/ArmsGroupStudy.
Armstrong 158 Group Study (first level)
Capacity=6. Has large plasma TV, DVD/VHS player, and cable for laptop hookup. May not be reserved.
Armstrong 159 Group Study (first level)
Capacity = 8. Has a whiteboard and large plasma TV, DVD/VHS player, and cable for laptop hookup. Reservations for 2 or more people may made online using go/ArmsGroupStudy.
Armstrong 161 Computer Lab (first level)
Capacity = 12. Has 12 PC workstations, 1 PC workstation at lectern and two 84" UHD (4K) displays. It is strongly recommended that instructors using this room for the first time contact Wendy Shook for a tutorial. For a list of software installed on these machines, consult the chart at go/software. Reservations may be placed in the calendar only by an Armstrong supervisor. Scheduling more than 7 days in advance is only for Library instruction/training, otherwise open as a computer lab. Reservations for the computer lab must be made by a supervisor; ask for one at the Circulation Desk, or contact Shawn O'Neil (802.443.3286 or firstname.lastname@example.org) or Wendy Shook (802.443.5799 or email@example.com).

Davison Library (Bread Loaf)

Users are encouraged to park behind the Bread Loaf Inn and take the sidewalk past the Little Theatre to the Davison Library main entrance.
The Main Level and the Lower Level have at-grade exits but the Upper Level is accessed only by the stairs. Please note that there are no elevators in Davison.

The computer lab ("Apple Cellar") is located on the lower level of Davison Library and contains PCs, Macs, and multifunction print/copy/scan machines. A technology assistant is on duty when the Cellar is open. PCs are also located on the main and upper levels of Davison.
Displays and Exhibits
There are several spaces in the library that may be used by groups or individuals for curricular or co-curricular exhibits. Contact Kellam Ayres (firstname.lastname@example.org, 802.443.5065) for more information.
Davison Library is open 24/7 when the Bread Loaf programs are in session. The Library is staffed seven days a week, with reduced coverage during evenings and weekends. Questions about hours? Two multifunction print/copy/scan machines are located in the Apple Cellar (lower level) and one multifunction machine is located on the main level of Davison. Scanners attached to Macs are located in the Davison classroom (upper level).
The Apple Cellar is located on the lower level of Davison Library and contains PCs, Macs, and multifunction print/copy/scan machines. A technology assistant is on duty when the Cellar is open.
The Davison classroom is located on the upper level of the building and contains basic projection equipment, computers (some with attached scanners), a media viewing station (with headphones), and tables/chairs.
