For example, copyright laws protect the character of Harry Potter, but this does not mean the use of a male wizard in other works is also prohibited, so long as there is significant difference.

Copyright laws protect certain materials by preventing this original work from being copied but they do not protect specific ideas or facts which my be conveyed through various forms. They protect the method used to convey those ideas or infomation. For example, copyright laws protect the character of Harry Potter, but this does not mean the use of a male wizard in other works is also prohibited, so long as there is significant difference.
