Users of POP or IMAP account will need to adjust their setting as below:

Incoming Mail:

  • Your Incoming mail server should be "mail.middlebury.edu".
  • Your Incoming mail DOES require SSL.
  • You can use either IMAP (preferred) or POP3 (may cause issues). By default, POP3 will only give you access to your Inbox and it will remove your messages from the server. Hence we strongly recommend IMAP.

For Outgoing Mail (SMTP) the required setup is:

  • Your Outgoing mail server should be "ssmtp.middlebury.edu"
  • Your Outgoing mail does require SSL (or TLS if available).
  • Your Outgoing mail server DOES require authentication, using the same credentials as the incoming server.
  • Do NOT use secure password authentication.

Settings for sending through your Midd account from GMail:

  • SMTP Server: ssmtp.middlebury.edu
  • Username: yourusername
  • Password: yourpassword
  • Always use a secure connection (SSL) when sending mail: No
  • Port: 25

According to the docs it will use TLS encryption by default rather than SSL.
