Welcome to the Middlebury Summer Language Schools for student workers! This page is intended to be a guide to new and current student receptionists and office workers during the summer and throughout the school year. The LS Student Workers Wiki contains answers to FAQ and more.

For more information, please consult the Language Schools homepage or type "go/ls" in the address bar.

Getting Started

Answering

Middlebury College Language Schools, this is ______. How may I help you?

Transferring

1.Tell the recipient that you are transferring the call.
2.Push ‘inquiry' button.
3.Dial extension or hit the extension button on the right
4.Wait for the 2nd recipient to pick up and tell them that you’re transferring a call. 5.Push the 'Transfer' button.

Note: If you reach the answering machine instead, push “C”, then push Access 1 to get back to the original recipient. Inform him/her to leave a message or take a message.

Voicemail

Always check for and attend to new voicemail.
Push “Message Waiting” button or dial 2100. The password is 6969.

Useful commands:

  • press 5 to hear new message
  • press 3 to delete message

Note: Once you have attended to any new messages, delete the message so that the next student worker knows which messages need to be responded to. If you cannot attend to a message before your shift ends, leave a note for the next person.

Making a call

Dial 82-17-65-43#9 and then dial normally. For on-campus calls, just dial the 4 digit extension.

If you are printing for Language School purposes, login to the computer using the Language Schools student worker account:

login: lsaprint, password: languages

Select SDL 202. (This is a color printer)

During the academic year, student workers mostly attend to phones and work on other projects as assigned
(photocopying, processing applications and payments, preparing acceptance packets, printing labels etc).

Other unofficial but important duties are:

  • Organizing the supply closet
  • Making sure that the Front Desk is neat
  • Checking in with the coordinators to see if they need any help

General Admissions

If I am applying to more than one School, do I need to submit separate applications/letters of recommendation?

Yes. Applicants must complete separate applications for all Schools.

Is there a specific template for recommendations? Yes. It can be found on the "Applying" page.

I have never studied this language before. Who fills out my recommendation form?

Students who have no prior language study at all should have people familiar with their work habits fill out the recommendation forms. Non-language professors, bosses, supervisors, and coworkers are good options.

For students who have studied a language other than the one for which they are applying, a recommendation from their language professors is a good option.

Can I have my recommender e-mail the letter instead of downloading?

Yes; please make sure that it has a signature on it, and that a hard copy follows by surface mail.
