Audio-Video Copying Services

ITS offers a number of audio-video copying and conversion services. It is extremely important to remember that copyright issues with copying and conversion are very complex.

Copying, displaying and distributing copyrighted works may infringe the owner's copyright. Middlebury College’s Copyright Guidelines can help you determine whether your use of a copyrighted work is a fair use or requires permission. Any use of computer or duplicating facilities by students, faculty or staff for infringing use of copyrighted works is subject to appropriate disciplinary action as well as those civil remedies and criminal penalties provided by federal law.

Important Notes

  • No duplication will be done without written copyright permission or a determination by the Library that the requested copying complies with U.S. copyright law.
  • To get the best results (quality, longevity, etc.), look for a commercial copy in digital format (DVD, Blu-ray or web video.) You can request a commercial title to be purchased through the Library by using this form: go/request.
  • Converting from one format to another may result in some loss of quality.
  • Converting to a digital format will not result in a higher quality copy. However, converting to a digital format will allow you to keep using the material despite changes in the industry (see the The Analog Sunset page for more details about industry changes.)
  • Processing times
    • Purchasing a commercial copy: If a commercial copy is available, processing times will vary based on availability.
    • Conversion (if no commercial copy exists): We require at least four weeks lead time for all streaming requests. This time period includes purchase and cataloging of a DVD if necessary, digitization, troubleshooting, and uploading to Panopto.

Copies or excerpts for classroom use

Please follow the steps below to request digital titles for classroom use. Please note that no duplication will be done without written copyright permission or a determination by the Library that the requested copying should be considered fair use of the materials.

For requesting digital copies of complete titles:

  1. Submit your request via the Library and ITS Request form. If there are specific questions or special needs, it may be appropriate to contact your Library liaison.
  2. The request will be reviewed by qualified Library and ITS staff. We will try to find and obtain a commercial copy in the best format available.

For requesting digital copies of portions of titles:

  1. If you need help in creating digital excerpts or clips, the Wilson Media Lab may be able to assist. Visit their home page for more information: go/dmt.

Copies of recordings made of on-campus events

  1. No duplication will be done without written copyright permission or a determination by the Library that the requested copying complies with U.S. copyright law.
  2. Contact the ITS Helpdesk (helpdesk@middlebury.edu, x2833) to make a request for this service. Please make note of the requirements below.
  3. This service is restricted to copies of lectures, classroom events, plays, talent shows, research data, etc. - Any events shot on campus with appropriate permissions.
  4. The requester must supply the video or audio master and good quality blank media.
  5. The requester must supply the same number of blank media as there are masters.
  6. Copies will not be edited in any way (e.g. if two or more tapes of an event are recorded, there will be no editing of the tapes onto a single copy - the Wilson Media Lab may be able to assist with this, see go/dmt).
  7. Language Schools must coordinate requests with their School’s bilingual assistant.
  8. Requests are usually filled within five business days of receipt of request.
  9. Requests are limited to a maximum of three tapes per request. We recommend the following third party service for larger quantities: http://www.vidsync.com/.

Personal copies

Library and ITS is researching options for copying personal audio/video materials. Retailers such as Best-buy are offering such services. We will update this page and make an announcement in MiddPoints when a recommendation is in place.
